Got looking into this Ottawa arena situation more closely. From what I can see, the model of funding the Senators are going after primarily involves receiving land and money from the National Capital Commission, which is federally funded.

So, there it is. Ottawa will get federal assistance for their new private interest arena.

Elon Musk has become rich due to both his innovative and entrepreneurial mind, as well has heavy government subsidy. Going to electric cars will, in the long term, be good for society overall.
I view this mega project as the same thing. A group of millionaires will only get richer from this project. However, Calgary as a whole will benefit from having a sports & entertainment megaplex, and the environmental disaster of the creosote site will finally be cleaned up. The government should contribute, because it will be a good long term benefit to the Calgary society.
One man's opinion.

The land is owned by the NCC, and they have been looking to develop it. It was the NCC who opened the land up to potential bidders and there were 2. If there is money going from the NCC it would have gone there regardless of the development. Also, the development planned there is much more than just an arena.

Except for Elon Musk. Applies for a grant which is judged based on the merrit of his proposal. Meaning he has to propose and illuminate all the costs of his research and projects and how they wil be funded and how they will gain money back before he even gets one cent. Elon Musk is a good business man he has his proverbial ducks in a row before he proposes his grants.
CalgaryNext left out a lot of these details. I've personally never said that CalgaryNext wasn't needed. Nor do i think there is no public benefit to these fascilities. I think, however, that this thing has been very poorly communicated on purpose to mislead and decieve so the Flames get a better deal for themselves in the long term.
My honest belief is this WV thing was always an ask for the moon strategy while the real working behind the scene has always been to get the council members on Stampede board to push for the Stampede board to play nice with the Flames and give them what they want and in the end of the day. We might just see a public use fieldhouse that is more for big events only (on stampede grounds). Something to host world track and field, womens fifa games, etc. while the city builds it's own public use facility down the road at Foothills.

Eugene Melnyk doesn't even like to spend on player salaries so I have no doubt that he would be looking to get money from all avenues for his new building. I can understand provincial and city levels of funding but how do you make a case for spinning an arena into a federal commission as there's no national interest in a new arena for the Senators.

Well, if CalgaryNext seems insane, it's got nothing on this:
Quote:
Voters in McKinney, Texas elected to give the go ahead to publicly finance the construction of a brand new high school football stadium. The proposed project is set to cost $62.8 million dollars, which will make it the most expensive high school football stadium in the country.
....
Just north of McKinney in Allen, Texas sits the 18,000-seat Eagle Stadium, with a price tag of around $60 million. The stadium closed temporarily in 2014 due to structural issues, but reopened in time for the 2015 football season.

Texas High School football would easily slot into Canada's second biggest sport after hockey. It's insane how big it is down there.

If they can build 18 000 for $60million, we should be able to squeeze 25 000 in for $90 million.

Somehow, I don't think this—
—would fly very well in our climate. Might as well stick with McMahon in that case.
And that's leaving aside the fact that for their $60 million (U.S.), they got a faulty design and crappy execution. Just two years after that stadium was built, it had to be closed for extensive repairs due to cracked concrete.

This is a very interesting development by the Philadelphia 76ers. They are incorporating a business startup incubator into their new 120,000 square foot practice facility.
https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/six...rtup-incubator
Quote:
“We’re really the first professional sports team to do this and run it in-house, rather than lending our name and outsourcing it,” says 76ers Senior Vice President Katie Grossman O’Reilly. “We want it to impact the community, we want people to be attracted to Camden and Philadelphia and to come here, start their companies and hopefully stay in the area.”
Startups will get a six-month residency at the incubator, which doubles as an office space/innovations testing ground for Kimball Office, a Jasper, Indiana-based office furniture company and co-creator of the Sixers Innovation Lab. Other benefits include access to the team’s legal, accounting, finance, web design, marketing activation and creative services.
The team is also hiring project managers, with entrepreneurial and venture capital experience, who will be dedicated to supporting resident startups. “We plan to be neck-deep in the day-to-day,” says 76ers Chief Revenue Officer Chris Heck. The team’s HR department will also provide startups leadership development and training based on what it uses internally.

The latest episode of Jennifer Keesmat's "Invisible Cities Podcast" features a chat between her and Richard Peddie, the former President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
It's pretty interesting. Jennifer Keesmat is the City of Toronto's head planner.
Peddle previously managed Skydome (Rogers Centre) and they discuss the benefits these facilities provide a city. Additionally they discuss how professional sports needs to be viewed as any other industry within city building/growth/ redevelopment. Peddie briefly mentions Calgary and Burke at around the 26 minute mark, by stating that the Flames need to contribute more to the project in their city.

Yeah, I believe he hired Burke, then retired afterwards, the team was sold and Burke was let go.

In the big picture probably very little if anything, although he may voice his opinion on it from time to time if he's asked by the media.

Peddie simply made a comment that "Burkie" may not like what he had to say.
