I know financing it is a big issue, and everyone loves to get their jollies debating what public money should be used, or not, but this would be amazing to have in Calgary.

Project still looks like a pile of trash. Not a fan of the field house/stadium combo. No matter how they spin it, I still can't see how both can be a true success and not take away from the other in some shape or form. If I have to sit inside a permanently covered stadium with a "Green Roof" that sheds no light I'll cancel my Stampeder season tickets. No way I want to sit inside a gymnasium in July. Still holding out hope for a 100% privately funded stadium somewhere on the Stampede grounds, a field house at Foothills Athletic park, and a new stadium a la Winnipeg/Saskatchewan somewhere. Why couldn't just the stadium be located in the West Village? Would be nice to have a new Arena and Stadium bookend downtown on either end.
For every season ticket they lose because it's indoors they'll probably gain two because it will be warm.

Wait, what? One of the biggest negatives from the vocal anti-CalgaryNEXT group has been the cost of improving infrastructure in around the WV site. Now we're talking about vast infrastructure improvements for a single facility, that being a new arena in EV? So it is okay to build new over-passes, train lines, and even a tunnel to get to this new single use facility, but not make much needed improvements to the infrastructure the city has already identified as being a problem? Okay, that makes a lot of sense.
Oh, and we're going to build a new field house on land where the infrastructure is terrible around that area too. The road access and parking in that area is a gong show and you're going to add a substantial facility that will see hundreds to thousands of visitors each day? That doesn't make sense either.
Then again, it certainly beats renovating McMahon Stadium, and trying to bring it up to modern standards. The same road and parking issues that will plague the new field house will also plague McMahon Stadium. The final point of what a failure this concept is, is the local community will still not be accepting of large event concerts. So another goal of this project gets missed.
Very strange that the people that are preaching fiscal conservatism for CalgaryNEXT have some pretty grandiose ideas about spending tax payer dollars to provide upgrades to their preferred location, even thought it addresses very few of the objectives of the larger scale project.
Or you're putting words in our mouths and painting opponents all with the same brush. My opposition has nothing to do with financial conservatism. I just want the city to spend money on things that will benefit the people (ie. makes the most sense for the city) and has the best ROI. I'd have them get to work on remediation and Bow Trail/Crowchild realignment as soon as they have solidified the long term plan. Even if that plan is simply improving the river corridor, and leaving open pits for future development. Of course, we'd lose whatever revenue we are getting from Greyhound and GSL leases...
I say improve the infrastructure around foothills as part of the construction there too.
Renovating McMahon would be stupid. And the public should not pay for it. The Flames/Stamps need to figure out how to make their operation work.
If the Flames want a free 'hole', I'd be fine with that synergy coming with the green line in that location. Passenger rail is a pipe dream, but perhaps they can at least keep it in mind for an area and keep it to surface parking to maintain flexibility. I am curious what discussion the city has had with Remington about the route of the green line through that area. Perhaps it is more with CPR as the green line will follow their tracks for much of the south leg.
I say spend away on bike lanes, libraries, transit and roads. If private enterprise supports/fits the vision for an area, go ahead and help them, especially where synergies exist.
IMO arena makes sense on or near Stampede. Flames can build CNext where they want it, but if the city agrees with me on optimal location, then their financial support for the project should be minimal.

That would have been a great launch video and set a better narrative for them. Too bad you only get one first impression.
I'll admit I hate it a little less after watching it, but I still don't think it's the best spot.

I'm with ya man. This will cut out far more summer games from my schedule than fall playoff games it will add.
Hell, I'd be stoked to just have some reno money put into McMahon to spruce up the concourse food & drink logistics/optionality and add some bathrooms.

Gahhhhhh. I'm being tricked by salesmanship and pizzazz! That looks pretty sweet.

It really looks like they're cutting out a lot of the upper level/lower cost seating in favour of higher priced corporate boxes. Not really surprising though knowing all along they weren't planning to increase seating capacity. they have to make that extra money somewhere.

All you have to do is look around the league to see the trend is toward less expensive to operate, outdoor venues. The only indoor stadium now is in BC and even with the ability to open up the roof, they have to partition off the top half of bc place for football games. in fact last year, the two teems with the lowest attendance; BC & Toronto.

Appeals to emotion, so that the city makes a bad deal.
There are lots of things in life that are really cool, but I'm not going to submarine my family finances to buy them. There's a reason you don't see too many Ferrari's parked in front of homes worth $500k or less. It would be pretty darn cool to own one, but it'd be a bad deal to take.

Yawn.

Don't forget taxpayers all chipping in for the privilege of an easy 20% increase in ticket prices.
Can't wait.
You have a problem paying for the privilege of pricing yourself out of a ticket? Don't worry, there'll be a lot of Hitmen tickets for the minions.

Ken King at his best, he makes it seem like the river and stadium need each other. If this was Vancouver with water taxis to help out traffic I could buy a little of it but this is the Bow where you can't even swim. Land with a bow river view should be residential and bring in tax dollars.
I love the core idea of two stadiums together but I hate the area for too many reasons, to name a few.
- immediate cost for cleanup and demolitions.
- later costs when they realize the roads can't keep up
- tax free prime residential land to billionaires for their hobbies.

Either of you think it is going to be different regardless of location? If you think ticket prices are going to go up with public involvement just wait of the owners have to fund the arena all on their own! You really won't like what the ticket hikes look like. It will be an event for the highest earners in Calgary.

I tend to think of the price increase as a crappy cherry on top of the bad location and poor design.
