Brouwer is a joke but in Gulutzan's world he is clown you put on the PP with your skilled players to screw everything up and on your PK to creates chaos by not covering the point against your team. The fact he is an Assistant Captain is just as much of a joke, SMH.
No Brouwer is exactly who is, someone we brutality over pay, someone we are forced to watch get way more responsibility and ice time than he deserves.

I was on the "Brouwer had a bad year but will bounce back" train. But this guy has no hockey IQ and no skill to make up for it. The only time he's at all effective is when he's playing a physical role, which he doesn't do with any regularity. He plays like Lance Bouma (at his worst) but paid like a top sixer. Maybe he's a good guy in the room but you can pay a lot less for a guy that brings veteran leadership and little else.
Mr Intangible Leadership is again absent in a big game where the Flames need something to wake them up.
Call me old fashion, but when Maroon is running his mouth, when Benning is lining people up with a flying elbow, or when the team is being humiliated on home ice by their biggest rival, wouldn't a fight have changed the tone? Wouldn't some physical accountability be in order?
This is what Brouwer is supposed to bring but he has no interest in doing so.
I think he's mailing it in and riding his NTC.
I have no idea what he brings to the team that couldn't be replaced by a player 1/4 of the cost.

It's obvious that he's been coasting ever since he joined the Flames. This guy used to muck it up and get in scrums all the time. He got paid and he doesn't care anymore
Buy him out. He's done

It seems that once players are financially secure for life their enthusiasm for playing really hard diminishes.
Flames are loaded with financial secure players. 14 players with more than 10M in career earnings, Tampa has 11, Winnipeg has 11, St. L has 11, Nashville 13, LA 12, Columbus 8.
The list of Flames with less than 10M in NHL earnings is really small: Tkachuk, Bennett, Ferland, Lazar, Jankowski, Kulak.

You probably have something here. I also think that in the new high tempo NHL the drop off after 31 or 32 years old is a cliff. You lose one step in this league and your edge is lost.
The smartest GMs need to go on vacation July 1st rather than look at any Free Agents over age 30. BT seemed to do that this summer for the first time.
The only FAs that are worth a look are those entering Free Agency for the first time at around the 26 to 28 years old range where you might still catch them in for part of their prime if the term is not too long. Frolik at 27 years old was a great example.
