Jerry's actions and gameplay were a joke in the house, but his interview with Julie afterwards, and his history have garnered respect from me.
Which made it all the worse when he was told he was in 2nd place. Who cares who was in second. All I could think was how bad I felt for the guy and his family situation, and not getting the $25k. Didn't think about it for Renny, didn't think about it for Libra... and wouldn't have thought about it for Jerry, had they not mentioned it.
The finally always seems like there's more tension, and everyone is on the brink of tears, happy and sad.
And they really picked on Jerry IMO, not quite that deserving.

I was doing some other stuff while the show was on and I must have missed this. What did Jerry say or do that earned your respect?

Again, I must've missed something. What is Jerry's family situation?

Obviously I didn't follow this season as close as others on the board. I found Jerry to be obnoxious and had an opinion of himself that was out of line with reality. He came through with on a couple of competitions when it mattered but his presence in the final three had a lot more to do with others dragging him along than it did his own gameplay. He deserved to be called out for criticizing Dan's behaviour when his own was not only much worse but also way out of line.

Jerry's wife is going through Parkinsons (I believe), which is the family situation I speak of. I would imagine that $25k would mean more to him and his family right now than to a Hooters Girl. But, I wouldn't have voted for him based on his actions.
As far as his interview, his admitance that this was his 'last hurah', as cheesy as it is for someone in their 70s to say something like that, he did make it to the final 3, and realistically, he doesn't have much time on this earth left. To go on national TV, and to talk about the last big thing he'll do, and to be excited to spend whatever time he has left with his wife... I earned a little more respect for the guy. (see my thread about death)
He was Big Brother's biggest hypacrite <sp?>, but he was quite the human being when unprovoked. And with the service background that he had, I have a hard time not giving credit for that.
I'm sure I could enjoy a beer with the guy, but there's no way I would want to spend ~70 days with him. No way.

The only time I really felt for Jerry for the phone call. I was really happy that he got it.

I don't agree with the way Jerry handled certain situations in the house, however, his worst comments were in moments of emotion like many of the other house guests, that being said, I don't feel he was any more of a jerk than the rest of them.
From what I've seen and how Big Brother has edited the episodes, I believe Jerry to have the most character of any of the house guests despite his silly comments like "Judas". The fact that he is a Korean War veteran and the loving caregiver of an elderly woman with a terrible disease trumps any notion that the other players are better people or have more character. Keeping that in mind, people should get off his case. Although at times I shook my head after some of the things Jerry did or said, I would still tip my hat to him for what he's done in life.
To end, I'm happy Libra was out of the house sooner rather than later, and the show would have been more entertaining with Jessie in the house until the end.

I found Dan tormenting Renny far more entertaining then I ever found Jessie.

I didn't know Jerry's wife was dealing with Parkinson's. Horrible disease.
That being said, he's getting credit for taking care of her... but he spends 70+ days on a reality TV show?
I have the utmost respect for people who serve their country during times of war. Jerry gets a tip of the hat for that. On the other hand, that doesn't give you license to be an emotional, insensitive twit.

From what I've read about the live feeds, by all accounts Jerry was an absolutely huge A-hole, and BB actually edited to make him seem more likable.

Look at Libra then... just had twins, and goes on the show. I think in both cases it was a family decision. I understand your concern, but it's not like they both just up and left.
As far as his actions in the house, I'm not saying that I'll erase them from my mind. But it showed a different side, something we don't always get to see from reality show contestants, nor anyone with the chance to be on TV or media in general.
Had he not had that conversation with Julie after his eviction, I would have had a completely different impression of the gentleman. His actions in the house were horrible, yes, but he's a compassionate family man, who got to live a dream, for lack of a better discription, as he was a big Big Brother fan before hand. Someone at his age too, being his 'last hurah', and making it to the final 3... you have to respect that somewhat, regardless how he got there.

Or I could be completely wrong about the guy.

Libra as well as probably 2-3 dozen previous BB house guests all probably fall under the same umbrella. I don't think it makes you a bad person for going on the show and leaving your family and loved ones behind for three months. It's rather neutral in my opinion. However, I don't think you get to play the "I'm sacrificing and taking care of people back home" card while you're sitting in the HoH room drinking beers.
It also drives me nuts when people take personal circumstances into account when voting for a winner. To me, it should be all about how you play the game. Your integrity and character in the House matter as do your strategies and tactics employed along the way. It really shouldn't matter if you are a doctor outside the House and really don't need the money. That bugs me, but I'm sure others have their own opinion on it and no one is either right or wrong.

That does not surprise me.
He calls Dan Judas for lying about who he was going to vote out. In week one, he betrayed Brian right away.
He critisized Dan for not wearing his cross when the live voting was done. In the first POV meeting he did the same thing when he did not put on his military gear
He critisized Dan for throwing a card after Dan wins his first HOH. After an HOH win by Michelle, Jerry goes balistic and trash talks the other alliance
Jerry is probably the biggest hypocrite out of all ten BB shows

I believe Dan is the best player in BB history, Will was amazing but I loved the way Dan played the game.

I think that basically everyone there has certain family obligations and took time away from that to be on the show. At the end of it all though, its a game...sure Jerry served in the Korean war and his wife has Parkinsons. As a human being I can be empathetic for him.
Unfortunately though it doesn't give you the right to come on to a game show and criticize other peoples lifestyles, religion or be rude and intolerant in general. If you do want to partake in those things then you deserve the critiques coming back to you.

I think Will and Boogie were the best "alliance" in BB history.
