Dashclock Widget is another great app to get, I forgot about it since I always think it was baked right into stock Android. The guy who made it, Roman Nurik, is an Android developer. I mentioned Muzei Live Wallpaper before, he's made both.

Both good lists by MMF and Regulator. An extra plug for both Google Drive and ES File Explorer, ES File Explorer can actually manage Google Drive so you don't need to use both. In fact it is fantastic all around for accessing media on your network, transferring files or just organizing your content on your phone.

Zedge for ringtones, wallpapers etc.
ConvertPad for all your unit conversion needs.
RealCalc is a decent free calculator.

The others have been mentioned.

I prefer Chronus over Dash Clock. Just find it to be a little cleaner and I like the little news feed portion as well.

ESPN Sports Center
Cal for a different calendar app/widget

Adding a few more I find useful:

MightyText
AllTheCooks
ChromeToPhone
DuoLingo
Feedly

I also really like Apex Launcher and how customizable it is.

Going to give Greenify a try as I'm not really noticing a huge savings with JuiceDefender.

Take a look at Contacts+. I would also second Old Yeller's custom launcher advice. I like nova personally, but I think both are equally awesome.

I just installed greenify on the advice of this thread. Any hints to make it work perfectly?

Tried it. Not a fan really. And it messed up several contacts pics. The pic on the grid would be someone else's pic and then when I chose that contact, their right pic would be shown. Just seems a little buggy to me.

I tried contacts+ for a while, but out of the blue it started trying to be my primary sms app, and wouldn't let me change it.

Other than that, I liked it.

If I could disable it, I would go back for sure.

It pushed this from that start and continued to push it. Even when you select no and then you select message a contact, it uses its internal messaging and not your default SMS app. Not sure me. Hate programs that take over like that as well.

So I've had Greenify installed for about 5 days and it's a noticeable improvement from any other battery saving app I've tried.

What's everyone's stupidly addictive games they're hooked on? Lately I've been playing Badland:

Such a simple game mechanic that's been done many times before, but the level design is pretty great.

Considering buying an android tablet for my mom, but one thing I want to make sure it can handle is mkv video.

I couldn't find much by just googling, so can anyone confirm whether, e.g. a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, will play mkv video?

If it won't you could just install something like MX player.
Pretty sure most Android tablets can though.
Just checked on the web,
Compatible Video Files: MP4, M4V, 3GP, 3G2, WMV, ASF, AVI, FLV, MKV, WEBM, TS; Video Player; Video Streaming; Video Codec : H.263, H.264(AVC), MPEG4, VC-1, Sorenson Spark, MP43, WMV7, WMV8, VP8, H.265(HEVC)

Built-in Android player played the video but didn't support the audio. MX Player worked great.

I've been playing Plague Inc. It's a great time waster.
It's been around a while, but new to me.

Hola Better Internet is now on my tablet - essentially an unblock-us app with a very simple interface that works. Yay Pandora in Canada.

Incidentally if you're going to suggest something could you please provide at least a description of what it does? Long lists of app names are worthless because I'm not going to look into each one to see whether it might be something of use to me.

Like I'm sure MMF's list is full of super useful stuff but I have no idea what any of it's useful FOR - other than Greenify which was sort of described and makes me wonder "Hm, does that work more effectively than Easy Battery Saver, which I'm currently using?"

No one's obliged to do anything of the sort obviously it would just be helpful.

Google search them?

Do you want me to install each app on your phone as well? Help you cross the road?

It was a modest request - taking a sec to type one sentence vaguely describing what each app does / why it's "must have".

For example, instead of just "Shazam", one might say, "Shazam is useful for figuring out the name and artist of a song - you press one button and the app listens to the song and gives you the info."

That is what I would like you to do. I totally recognize that you don't have to, and could just rattle off the names of a bunch of apps you have installed. It would just be helpful to have some detail.

The amount of time it would take him to rattle off what each app does is likely the equivalent or less than it would take you to search for the app in the Play store and read the description. You're being a baby.
