Right beside the numerous grow-ups and meth bake houses! (These things are more of a suburban problem than urban as organized criminals can better operate anonymously in a larger, cheaper house in the 'burbs than inner city.)

If you only reported news generated by a randomly sampled 50,000 people in Calgary I would venture there wouldn't be more violence, drugs, etc. than the 50,000 residents of Airdrie.

No, but just after I graduated, they had to disconnect the pay phone in the school because people were using it to deal drugs.

There was also the suicide pact a few years later.

Dino moved to Airdire for the same reason people don't move to Rundle or Whitehorn.

That's not cool, we all know that no one here ever talks bad about those neighborhoods

I liked what Molson had to say. I bet moving there in '92 would have been kind of cool as it must of been much much smaller with a more prevalent sense of community. A quick Google search for the stats on the town in 1992 didn't pan out for me, but I stand by the comment. Thus, it's HIS hood. Anywhere in the world to live is going to have it's ups and downs. But I would argue that good people, regardless of the style, aesthetic, and quality of the structures they live in makes any place a good place to live.

Would you rather be surrounded by good people, or good things? Imagine living in the most picturesque European town on a coast somewhere, but nobody likes or talks to you?

If someone feels fulfilled living in Airdrie then I would argue it has little to do with much of what has been represented as lynchpins in this discussion.

The racism bit was hilarious. Five-star thread! What a riot.

My wife and I moved to Airdrie in 2001 and it was because we got more house for our budget then we got in Calgary. It was also a shorter commute to our work at the time from the newer Calgary Communities

We moved into a brand new community with a newer school in it. Our children will never have to ride a bus to get to school until they get to high school. (by then they may even have a high school that is close to us)

We have a great sense of community not just in our Neighborhood but as a city as a whole. I moved from a different province like alot of people out here and have grown an extensive social network of people in Airdrie that I like and trust.

I have lived in Hillhurst, Mount Royal, Rundle and Mayland Heights prior to moving here and will generalize those communities the following way.

Hillhurst is filled with a bunch of elitist, former hippy yuppies that either rent slum houses to young DB versions of themselves or complain about their neighbors that renovated their house and pressure the slumlords to do the same.

Condo in Mount Royal had regular drug deals going on in back of the building. Great place to raise kids.

Rundle had NO ONE that showed ANY pride of ownership. Worst two months of my life waiting to take possession of my house.

Mayland Heights was quite, too quite. My wife and I were the exact same age as everyone on our streets GRAND CHILDREN.

My friends and family that spend the effort and time to see me and my family here in Airdrie have the same respect reciprocated and the ones that aren't willing to commute well I consider myself lucky they are no longer in my life.

Bottom line: I live in Airdrie, I love living here, my family loves it here and It's a great place to raise kids.

Airdrie is closer to home...I'd way rather be a closer drive to family than easy access to yuppie sushi places.

12,456 as of the 1991 federal census: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/c1996-r1996/4129979-eng.htm

Airdrie was incorporated as a city in the late 80s. 1987, iirc.

Well put by Sled, regardless of where you live if someone won't take a 20min drive to come see you that means you probably don't need them in your life.

1985, I believe. Airdrie is growing far too fast for my taste. It used to be a nice place before it exploded.

I thought we had established this inaccuracy already.

I drop my kids off at school at 8:00 every morning and walk into my office at Barlow and memorial at 8:30.

That's with traffic. On weekends I'm there in 20 minutes.
