It is the best show in television history. So powerful. Incredible story telling, unparalleled ensemble cast.
Bit of trivia too - it is Barack Obama's favourite TV show - and his favourite character is Omar Little. Amazing that he said that due to the fact that he is a killer. Thought it took guts. It says something about him that made me respect him more.

I just started watching "The Corner" which was written by david simon.
Many of the same actors are in it, it's about the drug corner in baltimore from the perspective of a dope fiend family. It's incredibly sad.....

FYI for fans of The Wire. Future Shop has seasons 1-4 for $29.99 each right now. I believe the sale ends on May 22.
I'm 3/4 way through season 1 and am loving it. Took a couple episodes to try and sort out the huge cast of characters though.

Bloody hell...what a show! Just finished up S5 and must say I'm bummed out that it's over. I can't get over how in immense the character base is. The story just grabs and does not let go. You feel for the characters like it's someone you know. I know that sounds corny but damn.
Wow.

I was thinking about The Wire today when I was reading the season premiere thread. I really wish that there was another season. Having said that I love the way they ended the show in S 5. If you are really in Wire withdrawl you can see Michael (Tristan Wilds) on his new show.. 90210

Was never a huge fan of the wire, more of a "The Shield" person myself. Did just watch the entire 7 hour series of "Generation Kill"(done by the same guys), and absolutely loved it. If The Wire is anything like that I'll need to be picking up some seasons on DVD. Advice on which ones or just start from the beginning?
Edit: I'm just not firing on all pistons today. Of course start from season one. It's late and I'm stupid. How many seasons were there, as I think I may end up spending entirely too much money on this.

I mentioned this in the "Should I be watching..." thread, but thought that some fans of The Wire may miss it.
Treme, the new series from David Simon, premieres this Sunday. The post-Katrina New Orleans plotline doesn't sound that great to me, but the initial reviews are good and I'll give anything by Simon a chance for at least a few episodes.
Entertainment Weekly gave it an "A" http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20355711,00.html

Just to add, I recently watched all 5 seasons of the Wire, one of the best series I've ever seen. Easily the best 'cop drama'... though I don't make a point of watching all of them so I'm not sure.

One of my favorite shows of all time, but I found season 5 to be the weakest, and another season would have ruined the show. I'd much rather see a show end on a good note than become mediocre with repitition like Oz and the Sopranos. I agree though, really loved the way they ended it.

I've watched the first three seasons of The Wire and I love it, haven't gotten around to catching Seasons 4 and 5 yet.
I've been looking forward to Treme, I'll give it a shot.

So, I'm bumping this thread because I don't know if it will warrant enough discussion for a new thread.
Treme started last night, did anyone else watch it? I did, I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to how it unfolds.

Really enjoyed The Wire, but don't get the 'greatest show of all time' praise.
It was extremely well done, but I think it's a big overstatement to call it some of the best TV ever.

I enjoyed it, but I'm a bit biased.
I think there is a lot of promise in many of the characters, and the cinematography/music is excellent.
NOLA.com created a little primer for folks who watched the show that may not be familiar with a lot of the local references:

I guess it depends what you're into. The Wire was a well crafted show that tackled some serious issues and made you work to become a part of it. It rewarded a viewers work with incredible moments.
It simply WAS some of the best TV ever.

What's better?
Also, loved the opening 5 minutes of Treme. Love David Simon. Highly recommend Generation Kill as well.

For any David Simon fans that have not seen the Corner yet HBO Canada is showing it over the next month or so.

Great show, but pretty different than the Wire. It is a faux-documentary as opposed to a drama.

I want to like Treme so bad but I just can't do it. I'll just keep watching it and hopes it gets better. FML
