Yeah goofy as it might be, the guy can still throw strikes and and give you a few innings. Plus he's got some big game experience. Certainly not a guy who's scared to go into Fenway or Yankee stadium to throw. Although a clubhouse with him and Thomas....Interesting.

I wouldn't be averse to signing him but you actually want to give David Wells 7 million dollars/year, for 2 years.....?

I think bringing Wells back would be nice as lone as its only a 1 year deal and as long as its worth no more then $6 million.

I think any deal involving Wells would have to be incentive-laden, based on number of innings he pitches. The guaranteed part of the salary would have to be pretty small.

7 mill? 6 mill? Are you guys nuts? It would have to be incentive based, for a mill or 2 for me...this isn't david wells of even 5 years ago...

Wells made 4 million last year...and I would say he would get that max, tops this year. I would, as I said, only offer him a couple of million on a one year deal.

In fact, you look at the last four years, he has been making approx. 2 - 4 million per year.
Also, just fyi, the most he has ever made in his career is 9 million in 2001 with the W. Sox...that seems a fair bit out of line with the rest, however. If you discard that year, he has apparently made a max of 5.5 million - with the Blue Jays nonetheless.

Wow, if JP signs David Wells he is a desperate GM.... In my opinion that would be a terrible move.
JP has to find another Pitcher who can supply quality Innings if the Jays have any hope to improve this year.

The Jays have got to get some more starting pitching but Wells doesn't seem to be the answer. Incentive laden contact is the only way to go with that guy unless he gets a back transplant.
Not sure how Toronto solves the pitching problem because if they make a trade then they make another hole in the lineup. I hope Adams can come around sometime during the year and take over at SS.

I think with you guys you forgot to take into consideration this years pitching market. Guys like Lilly and Meche got $11M smackaroos! It would be prudent to lace it with incentives, but if the market is hot enough for him and if Riccardi wants him badly enough, giving out a base salary could be what could sway him to sign here. Perhaps the $7.5M I threw out was a bit much, but $6M in guaranteed money wouldn't surprise me and also IMO would be a worthwhile gamble (it would be nice if he could get a team option for picking up a second year at that price, but that may be pushing it).

My take - far from the best solution, but I'd be more comfortable with having him around then relying once again on a bunch of shlubs in the 4/5 spot. When the injuries happen again, the Jays once again have no fall back plan. Wells gives them a bit more insurance in that regard.

I do agree I would rather have Wells over a shlub like Towers but Wells has a major league attitude problem. The Jays don't need a problem child especially with their current Manager...
I still think JP will make a trade for a pitcher and I bet Rios is traded.

In a way I hope the Jays don't trade for a pitcher at the moment because the market for starting pitching is so insane that trading Rios, who is an excellent outfielder, will not net the Jays anything special at all in terms of pitching.

Rest easy Jays fans, Wells signed with the Padres for 3million with incentives possibly pushing it to 4. I'm a big Wells fan, but the guy was done 2 years ago.

That wouldn't have been a bad deal for the Jays, 3 million for Wells, however, he clearly wanted to be in San Diego.
EPSN reports 2B Chase Utley got a 7-year, $85 million extention from the Phillies today: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2738188
Lots of stuff brewing lately that the Giants may be looking to get out of their deal with Steroid Bonds, though the recent leak of his failed amphetamine test may lead to greater job security for him.

I keep hearing that neither side signed anything, they just worked out numbers, but many terms were still outstanding.

Yeah, I think that both sides (for whatever reason) may have had reservations about the deal going into it. Maybe Bonds isn't doing so well medically, with his knee and all - who knows.
At any rate, this leaked failed amphetamine test will indeed probably lead to a stronger likelyhood that the deal will actually go through (I'm sure it was probable to begin with, but now ...)
But Bonds really does get my goat, I kind of wish he'd just go away! Oh well!

I don't know, the Giants want the salary conditional on any future suspensions, or if he can't play as a result of the BALCO thing.

Jays sign Tomo Ohka.
Not 100% sure on the money figures, but it is likely 1.5 million base + incentives pushing upwards of 3 million (total contract value).
Pretty decent deal, better than the arms we had.

Wow I cant believe they signed up for so cheap. Thats a great deal and gives me alot more confidence about the Jays starting staff.
