"It's pretty much low-risk, high reward for both of us," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said in an interview Tuesday. "We're just trying to take a chance. We think it's a good fit for both people."

Well considering he's like 1/22nd the price of Gil Meche it's a decent gamble. If he's healthy he won't be that different from a guy like Meche. If he's not, he didn't cost you an outrageous amount of money.

Looks like the newest Jay signed with Toronto because he has something against Lo Duca from the Mets, the other team to make him a major league offer.
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=191672&hubname=
What's his problem? From what I've seen, Lo Duca is one of the best in the game. Any history between those 2 that anyone knows of?

Nope all there is is this...
Thomson's dislike of the Mets could also stem from his seasons with the Braves and their rivalry with New York. He was loyal to his club and appreciated what manager Bobby Cox did for him last Sept. 27, letting him pitch in a game against the Mets so Thomson could showcase himself.

Yeah, but he singles out Lo Duca.
Just doesn't add up.

He also talks about Floyd being in the outfield and being a bad defender. Also says he doesn't like the way Lo Duca operates behind the plate. IMO the guy seems motivated to want to have a good year to really cash in after this year. He cites Zaun as being a competitor, Wells as an oufielder for reasons to be a Jay. Also figures that with being a sinker ball pitcher that the field turf may help him out as the ball bounces very consistanly on that surface.
I have to say, it's an interesting piece as the guy's willing to speak out a bit. Sounds like he really wants to prove himself.

Pretty interesting comments from a guy who's had 1 winning season in his career. What happens if the Jays sign Cliff Floyd which I've heard rumored for awhile??

Play him at DH! Thomson says he can hit, but he's a defensive liability (although he says it's Wells in the outfield can get to anything?).....Than again they already have Thomas to do that. Really signing Floyd wouldn't make a lot of sense for the team. They could use a LH power bat, but where would Floyd play? I don't really see an every day spot for him in the lineup. Possibly that's been suggested so that a guy like Rios can be moved and than Floyd is brought in to replace his bat short term and add a left to an unbalanced lineup?

I'm saying I like the move. It's clear that there is no way that the Jays can really get another SP without paying a King's Ransom now that Wells is locked up.
Worst case scenario, he gets cut out of training camp/last year's Josh Towers, best case, he turns into Thomson of 2004.

I agree, this is a good move by JP. For the dolllars paid its worth the risk... I bet the Jays are still looking for another pitcher but if they don't land one at least they have another arm in spring training.

In other news, Overbay signs for 4 years/24 million. Great numbers IMO, especially with much worse hitters (Shea Hillenbrand) getting more money than him.
If the inevitable happens (Troy Glaus needs to move to 1B), the contract is still at a perfectly reasonable $$$ amount that we should be able to move him without issue, and still get a decent return. I think Overbay is a very good hitter.

Overbay is a very solid player. With the FA market the way it is now, that's a heck of a price to get him for.

Such a good signing.
So we have Overbay, Wells, Halladay, Burnett, and Ryan all locked up long term.
Nice.

Yep, the thing is now we HAVE to get that young talent moving through the system - especially in the SP department to have a chance at making the playoffs. We don't have that stepping up to the plate right now.
With all the payroll locked up long term, we really can't afford to dish out for another impact player. Well, maybe one, but it has to be a pitcher - maybe next off season.

I don't like the guy, and it'd be interesting to see how most Blue Jay fans react.

I don't mind the Wells thing. That was 7 years ago, and just because he wasn't politically correct, doesn't mean he was wrong...in fact, I think he was right. At the time they had a pretty good team, and nobody came out to support them, and he spoke out about that on his way out (plus the Jays IIRC sent him to Mil when he wanted to go to the Yanks). I don't mind the guy sometimes. IMO, he still got a couple seasons left in his old bones (and surprisingly his conditioning has been alright in the past few seasons), so I'd be willing to give him a 2 year deal at $7M per if that's what it comes to.
