If there going to get anyone else, it's going to be through trade anyways, so there will be salary going back the other way.
Has anyone else actually reported this besides Yahoo? I know TSN has it up, but I would presume thats just regarding the report Yahoo published

For the record, as much as I love baseball talk, it does make me kind've sick to think were discussing a guy signing for this much money to play baseball

Jeff Blair a G&M writer has also reported it. Usually has good Jays info.

I totally agree, there is too much money, the league is rigged when you think that some teams spend 5X the amount for players than other teams ... and there is 160 games. regular season games are not very important.

Hmmm, seems interesting to me that the Jays have come with this offer now, after Vernon was left off all the organizational media(xmas cards etc..) being sent out, and after JP whiffing at the winter meetings. IMO seems like a big save face move by the Jays brass, they had to make it known that they tried very hard to sign him, before dealing him off shortly in the new year. I believe Vernon and his agent made it very clear that they were going to FA.

Yes, Blair is typically very reliable. In the Article, JP is quoted as saying that the have made an offer. Thats all he says. Blair references the figures from the Yahoo report, but JP refused to confirm those #'s

Some quotes from Vernon on the possible deal:
"Yeah, one way or the other, I think it needs to get done," he said. "Whether they want to stick it out with me (playing in 2007) if it doesn’t get done, or if they need to trade me to get pitching or if we get this thing finalized and over with and don't have to worry about it for the next however many years."
"I’m just going to say it's in the jump-ball phase right now."
"I think there was a tie-up and there's going to be a toss-up in the middle of the floor."

A rumoured M's-Nationals trade:
http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=188355&hubname=
Citing a source high in the organization, MLB.com reported Wednesday that the Mariners acquired second baseman Jose Vidro from the Washington Nationals for outfielder Chris Snelling and righthander Emiliano Fruto.
Doesn't Seattle have a 2nd baseman already, Lopez, who is fairly young etc?

Geez, looking at it now though, it's not a difference of $5M he could get on the open market, it's a difference of $75M! If I were him and I wanted that extra dough, I'd decline the offer. It's good on him that he appears to be taking the discount and signing here though. Unfortunately, it's still a lot of dough, and he won a no trade clause, which really throws a curve into possible trades down the road. Now, how are the Jays supposed to get starters and a capable shortstop?

There's two payrolls, one if they sign VW, and another if they don't
His signing will have no impact on signing a starter.

Also this new deal wont take effect until after the upcoming season, so really has no effect on the amount of money left for this season's potential acquisistions.

The opt-out clause is a doozy though. After 3-4 years, if he opts out (and probably will), the Jays will get nothing at all for him. That's the capper that will sink Riccardi's ship IMO, which is why this deal isn't a good one.

I dont see that as a big deal.
2-3 years down the road if the Jays arent contending and it seems as though Vernon might opt out JP can go to him, see which teams he would waive his no trade clause to play for, and then work out some kind of deal.
