This is almost exactly like the Chris Chelios trade. That trade crippled the Canadiens defence for a long time, and outside of their 1993 Stanley Cup - which had nothing to do with that trade - they enjoyed little success thereafter.

This trade will cause some fans of the Canadiens to give up on the team. It could potentially affect ticket sales. It will make the Canadiens worse this season than they could have been. The sad part is that it won't accomplish the things that it should.

This trade should cost Marc Bergevin and anyone else involved from the Canadiens their jobs. It should awaken team owner Geoff Molson that he doesn't have the right team in place, and that he put his faith in the wrong people. It should cause the type of change that this fanbase deserves. But sadly enough, it probably won't.

I forget who it was, but Kerr and Steinberg had a Sportsnet analyst from Montreal who basically said that there were divisions in the lockerroom because of Subban. The analyst said that it was "something that could be fixed if people talked to each other like adults", but added that Bergevin disagreed and evidently convinced Molson of it.

And sorry, but Subban's community endeavours shouldn't play any part in how management handles him as a hockey asset. That's not the way pro sports work. Joe Colborne is by all accounts a great guy and a tremendous citizen - a fact that Brad Treliving should ignore when he's assessing Colborne's contract and roster status.

in all of this, I have to say hats off to David Poile ... he's building a fantastic team in Nashville. Absolutely stole Forsberg from Washington, then made two big hockey deals to get a 23 year old #1 center in Johansen and upgrade from Weber to Subban. Well done.

That video of Subban making a barnstorming speech and throwing around gatorade in the Habs dressing room while his teammates sat there completely emotionless, most of them not even looking at him, was cringeworthy. Pretty clear he was not well liked, for whatever reason.

That number can't get smaller, and will be divided by the number of years remaining on the contract when he retires. If he retires with 3 years left, when the value of the contract drops to $1 million per year, Nashville will get hit with $8.19 million in cap hit per season for those 3 years.

Not great, but not too big of a deal for team that is under an internal budget and usually well below the salary cap.

Hockey managers are just as prone to overrate the past while hoping the present is an outlier as the regular fan is.
