Here's a guy in the last year of his contract, sitting on the edge of UFA, playing the best hockey of his career. He's going to get a premium.
I'd like to see 5 years at $4.5, and would consider that a pretty good deal.

Had an idea!

He's a very smart player. His ability to block so many shots without getting injured is pretty insane, but he makes so many other good decisions with or without the puck.
Probably the most underrated player in the NHL at this point. Especially with Gio out.

While certainly a good rate, I'm not sure it'd be easy to move if other teams don't have the same value for him, and if there's one thing we have, it's left side prospects (Hickey, Rafikov, Wotherspoon, Culkin, Kulak, even Cundari) to go with the Holy Grail of Gio and Brodie. Giordano, Gaudreau, and Monahan are still the top priorities next offseason as far as the cap goes, and then see where the cap situation is. I'd probably wait until Russell is a UFA and negotiate then, and if you can grab a mid-1st rounder for him at the deadline, it's worth consideration IF other guys step up to the plate. Don't get too attached even though he's awesome.

He's already under contract for next year. He signed a two-year deal last February.

I was very skeptical of picking up another small Dman when Feaster did, but I am happy to be completely wrong on this one.
An absolute anchor of our blue line, and actually one of the things I like is that he should stay fairly affordable since he doesn't have a lot of measurables in his favour (besides shot blocks). He isn't a big point getter, which should keep his price down.

This guy has been unreal for the team. It's as if Giordano pulled Russell aside before he left and gave him his magic ring or something.

Really enjoying his play, but prepared to revisit this discussion in 1 year. i'm prepared to pay him what he is worth, but let's be sure he is a legit 30+ point dman before we start doling out 4x4 or more.

I would settle for 4 million but as a team it would be best to sign him for 3.5.

Brodie signed a 5 year 4.65/year deal, so based off that I don't think 4/year would be unfair.

The real question is how much would another team pay for a Russell? Not what we (fans) would pay him. Also, what are some comparable contracts/players numbers? And then the X-factor of NHL shot blocking leader, holds NHL record for shots blocked. (BTW, what exactly is the record? Blocks in a game or season?)

Flames acquire Kris Russel for a 2014 5th round pick and sign him (1yr, $1.5mil)

Haha, reading this quote made me LOL. MacT better than any GM, I think not. Hilarious.
Anyway, looking back at the comments when this trade went down is funny. Ya, we could find a diamond in the rough in the 5th round but I'll take an NHL player in their mid 20s everyday of the week over a 5th round pick.
I think Russell will be here for a while and will be one of our leaders when we become a contender. He fits what this team is and we all likely couldn't be happier with the way he has stepped up since Gio went down.
My only ask is that he shoots more often, that is all.

Well we all know that he has the record at 15 blocks in a game just last week. Now for in a season, I'm not sure.

I would give him 5 million a year. When that guy retires, he is still going to have bruises that will take decades to heal. Plus, that money we pay him will stay in the Alberta Economy and create new jobs.

Agreed - and as we can see from last night - when he shoots he can find the twine.

he's also getting more opportunity to shoot as teams key in on stopping Wideman's bomb.

Obviously we don't "all know" what the record was, if it was for a game or in a season, I had heard different things from a few people, hense wanting clarity.
But I am curious what the record is for most in a season, is he close?
