As for the Penguins, I wonder if they trade or buy out Fleury to make some room. Another guy they might move to free up cap space is Paul Martin.
Yup he lives here in the summer, its not an uncommon thing for him to show up at various events going on in "downtown" St. Albert during the summer.
That said, if Ryan Smyth didn't sign with the Flames 4-5 years ago simply because he knew how poorly it would go over with Oiler fans/media, I expect the same out of Iggy. I sincerely doubt it'd happen though. The only reason I'd even be slightly concerned is because he already surprisingly had the Canucks as one of his potential preferred destinations when going into the deadline...though that had more to do with wanting a shot at a Cup, something you don't have to worry about in Edmonton.

The guy wasn't even there for two days before he was telling reporters that the Penguins were the model team and had such a winning atmosphere and great tradition. I guess Iggy forgot he was largely responsible for the development of the attitude and atmosphere in the dressing room. Making such comments in such a short period of time is a direct shot at the Flames organization. It would be like spending two days in a new city and then proclaiming it to be the best city in the world. How the hell would you know one way or the other when you have such limited experience in that city? How the hell would Iginla know anything about how the Penguins were run with less than two days of experience with the team?
Saying nice things about the Pens doesn't mean he feels the opposite of about his experience with the Flames.
he didn't say it is nice to finally play for a model organization, didn't say or imply that it was different in Calgary and never in fact mentioned, implied or said anything that would lead anyone to believe that what he was saying had anything at all to do with Calgary.
And two days is plenty of time to see how a team is run especially when teams aren't run in secret so he already would know about the success the team has had, the quality players the team has brought in and quality of the coaching staff and management. He doesn't have spend 2 years in Pittsburgh to know that guys like Crosby, Letang, Malkin, Shero and Bylsma are all top level guys and contribute to a class organization.

Iginla is not at fault for the short comings of management, but there is more than enough problems to laid at his feet when it comes to the culture of the hockey club and how it developed over the past decade. He shouldn't be out there shooting his mouth off about how great it is on another team when he was the leader of the club he just left and where things were obviously not so prime. I see Iginla's comments no different than those of a C-level employee leaving a company then saying how poor the culture of the enterprise was. He was in a position of leadership and establishing cultural norms. Don't bitch about it once you leave when you were in a position to establish those norms.
Sure some bitter fans who are shortsighted might put plenty of blame at Iginla's feet but he never once made them make poor trades, never forced them to not rebuild, never once forced them to make garbage FA signings, didn't force them to misjudge the team and think it was close. That is all 100% managements fault.
He should definitely be saying what he feels about his new team and not hiding anything/lying about anything because the Flames are in a crap situation. Again he never once said anything about the team so your garbage C-level emplyoee analogy makes no sense at all.
Where did he bitch about anything when leaving?

iggy has gotta go where iggy is guaranteed to be playing on a contender. I have to admit i am much more interested in what draft pick we get than whether iggy gets his cup, so that being said, don't really care too much about where he ends up... well almost.
I would hate to watch him play on another canadian club, particularly the nucks, oilers, leafs, habs.
If he plays on ANY other team, that team is immediately a team i will typically root for. But if he ends up on any of the mentioned canadian teams, my hate for those teams outweighs my loyalty to Iggy.

I'd argue that Ottawa was what Calgary tried to do; win a cup with their franchise player (Alfredson). The difference is 1.) Ottawa sucked more than the Flames on their off years to draft high and 2.) Ottawa (under Murray) has a better draft record than the Flames.
It can also be argued that, with league parity, success can be achieved the "Ottawa" way in that a team can alternate between sucking for a high draft pick one year, and then trying to make it the next year. You see teams like Carolina and Tampa, who basically tank every other year to keep refilling their prospect pools with high end talent.

It was the truth. Not sure why any fans would be upset at Iginla making a truthful observation about his new team.
Iginla played a role in the Flames downturn but at the end of the day the ultimate responsibility for the poor state of the franchise falls at the feet of Ken King and the owners. The fact Iginla is gone and the same clowns are running the show simply means that this team is going to fail and embaress themselves with or without Iginla.
As for Iginla signing with the Canucks I would be fine with it. At the end of the day it's a business and in a way King and the Flames owners have it coming for the way they fumbled the team during Jarome's career in Calgary. We can only hope they learned a valuable lesson in how to properly build a Stanley Cup contender but I have a bad feeling they will be looking for more quick fixes.
The Flames are a very young sports franchise, in terms of how long they have existed. Developing a club that consistently challenges for the Stanley Cup is a very rare occurrence, and even the most elite dynasties go through cycles of decline. Not only is the process cyclical, but it is inevitable. The powers that be will have learned from their errors & with any luck are wiser & better-equipped to navigate the team towards success.
Ownership & KK can be blamed for trying and failing to win it all in a 7 year window of time & not having a contingency plan. I don't think they deserve to be run out of town or deserve the pitchforks that have come out around here. Cleaning out upper management would stall any progress we could make.
Management should be blamed for not sewing the seeds for long-term success & making terrible, panicked moves to try to right the ship, but the main perpetrator of that was Darryl & he's paid his price. I'm not sold on Feaster, but he's doing a job. Hopefully he's keeping the GM chair warm for someone who is the real deal.
Iginla was the face if the franchise, but to suggest he contributed to its decline is ludicrous. The guy is a lead-by-example leader who, at his peak from 2001-2009 was a dominant force. For 1 season he was a 1-man wrecking crew and got us to within an inch of the Cup. In the following years a strong team was built around him which should have contended, but it didn't work out. You can't expect anything more from an athlete. He left with dignity & on very respectful terms.
I expect him to spend the next 2 to 3 years chasing a cup & then, if successful, I could see him re-signing to mentor a young & hopefully resurgent Flames team in a Lanny MacDonald-esque way.

It's plain that the governing principle of the Flames franchise for the last 10 years has been to make Jarome Iginla happy. To that end, management:
Brought in players Iginla liked
Brought back players that Iginla liked
Turfed every coach that got exasperated with the Iginla-led players
Continued to operate in a Win Now mode to keep the goal of winning with Iginla alive
Tip-toed around serious and ongoing issues with the compete level of the veteran players
If the Flames started making serious re-tool moves three of four seasons ago - moving out Phaneuf for picks and prospects, moving Regehr for picks and prospects, hanging onto their own 1st and 2nd rounders instead of dealing for Jokinen and other vets - Jarome Iginla would not have been a happy camper. They would have had to move him too.
Flames management has been incompetent in a lot of ways and for a long time. But their biggest mistake in the last five years was treating Iginla like something more than what he is - which is a commodity. I hope they learn their lesson, and never treat another player, regardless of how big a star or how well liked, as though he's bigger than the team.

There's 2 ways to look at this:
1) They did all of the above to keep Iginla happy, as you've suggested or;
2) They did all of the above to get the most out of Iginla (& the rest of D. Sutter's "core"; Kipper, Regehr & briefly Phaneuf)
In retrospect both perspectives are incredibly flawed. I think you are correct though; they had better have learned their lesson. Build for long-term success.
Sutter & King both knew they had a very limited window to win with that 'core'. They threw everything they could at it & knew they were gambling the future success of the club. We're now paying the price.
It's weird people are saying Iginla lives in St. Albert... I know his folks are there but have heard a ton of people say that he lives in Kelowna during the summer since I moved here too.
I know for sure he has a place in kelowna, I would imagine he also has one in St Albert. At 7m a year houses are just pocket change. (Heard a rumour for the house in kelowna it was pretty much built and iginlas wife decided she wanted the garage on the other side of the house so they had to re do a ton of it.)

Maybe he has an evil twin, just like Mayor Ford.

That is managements fault not Jaromes and the win now mode has as much to do with Kipper keeping the team close enough that they could keep that mirage of win now going for as long as they did.
The compete level of veterans BS seems like a witch from bitter fans.

I am sure Kipper would have been the same. Not just Iginla forcing the issue here.

Same thing, or more considering the trade deadline, could be said about Kipper.
And every point is 100% on management and ownership not on Jarome Iginla who has done everything a fan, coach, GM or owner could ever want a player to do for this organization.

Ya no doubt that he might even have a 4th place somewhere tropical with the kind of money he has, guess I meant where he actually lives for the majority of the summer. Maybe he splits his time, first I ever heard about him spending offseason in St. Albert. Like myself, has to endure a few mosquito bites and the potential for May/June snow for family visits .
Have heard some crazy things about the place he built here as well out in Carr's indes, hearsay from one of the trades about how ridiculously nice and huge it is (9,000 sq.ft on 3 levels on the lake).
Personally can't blame him but was super disappointed when he sold his house in cowtown without even waiting until free agency, hoped if he got his cup he'd come back. If I had to bet I'd say Pittsburgh, despite the cap crunch could see him taking a haircut to stay in Pitts for one more year if they don't win it all this year, like 2mil/1season. His drive right now seems to be to win a cup at all costs, will be tested if he doesn't get one this year as he'll surely get a 25mil/5yrs or 20 mil/4yrs kind of offer like Doan got from a team with cap room who don't have as good a shot as the Pens. I think he is supporting cast these days and that kind of deal would be damaging to any contender.
