I really think we should offer a 6 year deal. Takes him to 31, and then we can sign him again for 3-4 years where he'll probably be our 3/4 guy (hopefully we have other defenseman by then that can be the #1/2).

I'll say 6 at $36 million.

I let Brodie play at least 30 games this season before I decide on a number. He's been progressing nicely the past 2 seasons, but that's accelerated exponentially to start this season. It's one thing to join every rush and hustle back for a handful of games, but another to have the stamina to do it night-in, night-out for a whole season. Make sure there's some staying power to his current level of play before you back up the money truck, IMO

I think in a likelihood that's why there isn't a signed deal there yet

It's all Brodie though....right? It's not Gio being awesome and making Brodie look good in the process? I'm sorry, just a little paranoid when it comes to backing up a tuck full of money

5 years 22.5 mil seems fair.

That would be excellent for the Flames. Seems fairly low on Brodie's end, though. Not sure why he wouldn't get more when his agent compares him to the rest of the league.

Brodie gives up 2 years of UFA for 4 million? Not a chance

Nice to hear. At age 24, I look at Brodie as being the future cornerstone of our defense.

Gio makes 4 mil per year and he has 2 years (this year and next year) on his contract, then he becomes a UFA.
There is no way that they are going to pay Brodie more that 4 mil for the next two years.

The circumstances regarding the deals are in no way comparable.

It could go something like this: $3.5M, $4.0M, $4.5M, $5.0M, and $5.5M so that would keep him lower than Gio.

Gio's contract was appropriate at the time he signed it. Brodie is better now than Gio was at that time. He'll get what he's worth now (which is north of 4 mil) and Gio will cash in with an extension next year.

Yep and that is 22.5 over 5.

Wha?
Brodie's salary is set for this year, but next year he needs a new contract and he will most certainly make more than 4 million. There is no Giordano cap in Calgary. Wideman already makes over 5, has for three seasons and will for another two after this one. Brodie is about to get paid.

Wideman's contract was a mistake. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Wideman traded this year, thus making Gio the highest paid d-man on the team.

Even if Wideman were traded, there is no Gio cap.
Giordano's contract was signed years ago and is irrelevant with respect to new contracts being signed today.
Brodie's cap hit will be more than $4m. Guaranteed.
And then next year, it will be time to extend Giordano. And then we'll be talking some real money!
