I've often thought of Phaneuf as a Benjamin Button kind of guy in that he rapidly gets dumber and dumber each year.
I don't think you can use injuries as an excuse. He just doesn't have the hockey IQ needed to be considered a top D Man in the league.

Yes, that's true. But he was much, MUCH better in his first two years with the Flames than he is now, and it has a lot to do with his reduced mobility from injuries. His limited hockey IQ does him no favours, although I think he could have been better off with better coaching since he left the Flames.

I wonder if he just appeared so much better because Sutter was giving him all the easy minutes. He was only 19/20 years old at the time, and we had Regehr in the prime of his career to eat the tough minutes.
Then again, my memory is quite foggy when thinking back 8 years.

Here is an excerpt from Duhatschek's article in the G&M today on the Brodie signing. This team knows they are improving and are starting to believe in each other - a good sign.
Brodie said he could see the team’s upward trajectory, “and everyone in the room feels the same way. Last year and this year, we’re in every game and compete and have that never-say-die attitude, no matter what the score is. It’s something that’s rare to find – and exciting at the same time.”

A little late to the party but damn am I happy we have Brodie locked up! The kid is a rising star and we are quite fortune to have him develop into the player he is today. Finally a draft pick that worked out better than we ever imagined!

I think the injuries did play a part in his lack of development, but I also think it was his attitude as well. If you believe Warrener's side, he and Regehr approached Phaneuf to try and help round out his game - namely solid defensive positioning. Dion's reply was something like: "As long as I am scoring and making big hits, then it doesn't really matter much."
They then approached Keenan thinking Keenan would step in and hold Phaneuf accountable, but Keenan just shrugged it off and kept playing Phaneuf big minutes.
That is more or less what I recall from Warrener in the first few days of him being a host on the Fan960 anyways, though perhaps I may be misremembering some of the details.
Either way, you didn't really see Phaneuf take any more development steps between his second and third season here, and it is really comforting to see the exact opposite happening now with Brodie as he seems to be taking huge strides every season.

Coolest thing about Brodie for me, is the fact that Calgarypuck has a scouting history with the guy. He was noticed in training camps, discussed as a darkhorse prospect with some pretty huge upside, and ranked well when we put up lists of the team down the road. There wasn't a lot of chatter about the guy at all, yet he was already on thi site's collective radar.
Typically we over shot at the time, and had him slipping into WJC rosters etc, but his development was the best example of this group seeing something I can ever remember.

No big surprise as Boomer has taken many shots at the Flames.

IIRC, Duhatschek also commented yesterday that he thought the Flames overpaid a little for Brodie. And we all know what a blithering dolt that guy is .

Some people are stuck in the past a bit over salaries. Those guys may be two of them. If you look at the list of d-men paid more, its at or below market value.

Yeah, we overpaid what people want to pay a young defenseman. But in no way did we overpay in the current market. Right now it's fair market value. In 3 years it will be a ridiculous deal.

The recent contracts to defencemen have been a little more cap friendly, but are not the best comparables, as Brodie is giving up more UFA years in this deal
Muzzin = 5 years @4M per
Brodin = 6 years @4.167M per
Those would be the two contracts Brodie is being compared to, but it is not the fairest comparison, as Muzzin is a good 2nd pairing defenceman and Brodin is signed over more RFA years

I think it's a good contact. But I don't think a pundit who says it's a little high is 'taking shots' at the Flames.

I'm very pleased with this contract, good on TJ to command such a deal. He deserves it.

Looking at CapGeek Brodie's salary is broken down as
2015/16 - $3.9M
16/17 - $4.8375M
17/18 - $4.8375M
18/19 - "
19/20 - "
with a cap hit of $4.650M per year
The thing about this contract besides the first year nod to Giordano is that it doesn't rise as the years go on and sets us up for his next contract. This way if he gets say $6M on his next contract it will be a raise whereas if this contract ended at $6M and he wanted and deserved a raise the contract would need to start above the $6M mark.

I grin every time I see the 3.9m. It just shows that Brodie respects Giordano as the captain. It was a very classy move.

I remember when people here were calling TJ Brodie a bust. That was when he was demoted to the AHL and I believed he was very unhappy and pouting (hmmm.. sounds familiar to Sven basher?). People here were just saying get rid of that guy, trade him and he is a bust. Look what happenned after that? Some young players might look like a bust at the beginning but with the right guidance, they'll turn out to be a good player. All Brodie need was something to boost his confidence. He sat out some games and learned from it and now he is one of the best young defenseman in the league. Congrats to TJ! I love watching this guy skate and play. He's been one of my favorite Flames the past few seasons.
