This makes me happy though. I was already planning on getting the retro I grabbed for 20 bucks turned into a Brodie. This confirms it. Then I need a Gaudreau away

No official numbers yet it seems, but assuming they are as reported, seems smart for both sides.
It's serious money for Brodie, but not too bad even if his game drops a bit and he becomes more of a 2nd pairing guy. On the other hand if he does break into the category of widely accepted elite defensemen, he'll still have time to collect gross paychecks after this contract.

We have all seen the progress of Brodie over the last few years, and there is no reason to expect he won't improve. Contract is great, and is fair for someone who is on an upward trajectory.
Lets hope he keeps improving!

IMO that contract is fair for what Brodie is bringing right now, if he improves that contract will only be even better.

Need to judge Brodie on his own as well (without Gio) to make sure he is the player he can be. That will be the real test.

Why would they ever be separated?

We had an 18 game sample size last season that said he'll be fine without Gio.

Good contract extension by Treliving. Next on the "to do" list is Backlund.

Great signing. Extremely underrated thanks to being out West, but we'll take it!

Great job by Treliving. I said earlier that I thought it was going to be north of 5M but this is a dollar amount.

Fair enough. I still think he's put to the test when Gio goes down with an injury or the lines are juggled.

Trade, Gio doesn't re-sign, injury, our D develops more and other pairing combos become an option. Many things.
Point being, how good is Brodie sans Gio? I think he's just fine for the record, but that was likely the point, and to expect that Gio and Brodie will be two peas in a pod for the extent of Brodie's extension is silly.

There is no sign that Gio will not be signed here in Calgary. The first year of Brodie's contract indicates every intention of Gio being signed.

Don't disagree, but for whatever the reason, I'm sure plans for Brodie go beyond him being Doc Holiday to Gio's Wyatt Earp for his entire career.
Brodie needs to be able (and again full faith he will) become the premier defender on a pairing, not just a great shot gun man to a premier defender. Pretty sure that was the point of the poster who made the comment, and it's certainly the intention the Flames have for him based on this extension. Which is great, it's exactly what this team needs, players like Brodie who develop in our system to become key member of our core that can play and be better than the others teams best.

Years down the road we as Flames fans are going to look at this deal as a great bargain.

As for Brodie... damn fine deal.
