Such a steal. I'm convinced he's going to be worth more than $4.65M at the start of the contract, let alone by the end of it.

awesome deal.

Backlund, Bouma, Brodie are very positive results of D. Sutter's drafting as GM, which are otherwise considered lack lustre.

Amazing deal for the Flames.

Brodie is the most under rated defencemen in the NHL.

I hope he can continue to grow, his emergence in the last year has been one of the more positive things about the rebuild thus far.

Certainly there is risk that he could "Phaneuf" and regress substantially in terms of his play. But really if he did, that cap hit in todays market is hardly a death sentence. Plus in order for him to start making an impact in the NHL, he's had to showcase a certain level of hockey IQ. He is a really good skater, but it's not like he's a guy who came into the league with great size and a big shot while being a good enough skater like Phaneuf was. So it's not like his physical gifts have been able to mask the other warts in his play.

Good news, for sure, always happy to see guys who want to be part of the team, especially a guy like Brodie who I do believe will be part of the solution.

Funny how Sutter got rid of Phaneuf too and he had his best years with us.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Brodie is a $4.65M AAV. Interesting: his first year is $3.9M -- a nod to Giordano, who has one year left on his deal at $4M. (1/2)

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
The rest is spread out evenly over four years. There is a limited NTC and a no-move clause starting in Year III, when he becomes eligible.

I thought this was interesting from Elliot Friedman, the number of top 4 defenseman that are 27 and under that will hit the the UFA market in the next 5 years?

The number is 6..... for those that think defenseman are easy to sign and you can always pick them up in the UFA market. And that number 6 will likely drop...

The funny thing too is that Brodie got his big push from the organization the same year that Tom Erixon wanted out citing that the Flames don't give young players a chance.

Don't get me wrong, Brodie is a legit talent that wasn't going to be ignored for very long, but I do wonder if Erixon had signed, maybe he would have been pushed over Brodie at the time.

I've been waiting to see if/when Bouma get's extended to put his name on my retro jersey, but a Brodie jersey is tempting too.

Trust me, Nikitin will be the better deal in the long run. I know this because the first syllables in his first and last name match. Therefore, Nikitin is the better player.
