It's a "I bet half the teams in the NHL would gladly trade their rosters for ours" moment.

Come on Lewis.

Why don't we take a look at one of the teams that likely would love Johnny...and are middle of the road. The Flyers

2016: Rubston
2015: Provorov
2014: Sanheim
2013: Morin

A little heavy on D but with Provorov in there still pretty good.

Fair enough. It's meaningless though because it doesn't matter if they have interest or not. He wouldn't sign with them anyway, so what does it matter who Edmonton or Vancouver drafted in the last four years?

It's not meaningless because it wasn't being suggested as something that would happen. It was proving why the original statement was false and hyperbole.
You are arguing about something that no one is arguing about.

It's to illustrate a point. Four 1st round picks will never be traded for one player in this economic system.

I really hope someone gives up 4 draft picks to take McDavid away from the Oilers.

That seems incredibly common in this thread.

Yup. Even if the Oiler match it will surely drive the price up.

exactly... why would he sign with a rebuilding team and what contending team would be able to make an offer?

The Pittsburgh, Chicago, Blues Kings Tampa and other top teams that are drafting year after year in the 15-30 range are almost always dropping salary to get under the cap. Which of those teams is going to have 9.5 M in cap space?

NJ has about 12M in cap left and a defense that looks worse than Edmonton's on paper. Not hard to see 2 or 3 high draft picks in the next 4 years on that team even if they had Gaudreau

There's more teams in the top 15 than those three. Also, contracts expire every year and teams make trades to shed salary all the time. You're acting like the top 15 teams are permanently and hopelessly maxed out with no way out. For instance, imagine Philly trades Voracek and then signs Gaudreau. With their young D coming up, do you really think the Flyers are drafting in the top 10 for the next four years after?

Four years is a long time in the NHL. The last four Flyer 1st round picks have been at 22, 7, 17 and 11.

Gaudreau calls the contract situation "painful":
http://slam.canoe.com/Slam/Hockey/NH.../22667391.html

Quote:
However, the 23-year-old winger insists he is happy to suit up for Team North America’s young guns squad as it gives him a chance to escape what he calls a painful contract negotiation process.

“Honestly, throughout the whole summer and contract situation it’s been so painful because every day it’s something that’s on my mind,” said the restricted free agent who has yet to come to terms with the Calgary Flames.

“So this tourney has helped me not worry about that. I can just play hockey, have fun, be part of the team and hang out with teammates. It’s been the easiest part of my summer without the contract situation there.”

Is that a sign of weakness or am I just reading too much into the comment? I don't recall Brad Treliving ever calling negotiations "painful".

Surely it is only as 'painful' as his agent wants it to be, isn't he the one doing all of the negotiating?? I thought Jonny was taking a back seat and letting his agent do all of the leg work, which is what it should be. If it is still painful I read into it that his agent is playing hard ball when Jonny just wants it done. Just my opinion.

That's possible. Or Johnny wants to distance himself from his agent in case fans come to hate Lewis Gross for being tough.
