One day, Gaudreau will re-sign and this thread can be buried under apile of ruble. This is driving everyone mad now. Why won't they think of the pantsless basement dwelling forum posters! Sign for them dang it!
By whom? Who has 4 1st round picks and 9.5 of cap room that Gaudreau would want to sign with.
Would you match 9.5M and pass on Carolina's next 4 1st round picks?
of the recently signed RFA's who would you want the Flames to offer sheet?
The Flames have a hole in their prospect pool due to getting Hamilton. Having no valid 1st round picks for 4 years (Nemisz, Erixon, Gormley, Baertschi) led to the mess where the Flames are digging out of now.
And who would you let go to accommodate the extra 9.5M? Buy out Gio? Trade Brodie and Backlund.
Almost every team in the league would happily part ways with 4 draft picks to have a player like Johnny. They'd find a way to fit him in. Just like Treliving should.

Pure conjecture on your part. And by that I mean, "I'm discrediting Johnny".

Laine, Connors, Ehlers and Morrisey
Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Gauthier and Morgan Rielly?
Puljujarvi, Mcdavid, Drasitl, Nurse
Keller, Strome, Pernelli, Domi
Juolevi, Boeser, Virtanen, Horvat
Nylander, Eichel, Rienhart, Ristolainen
even the Flames: Tkachuk,(Hamilton), Bennett, Monahan

This tells me is that Tarasenko's contract is out of whack. And maybe something about the value of only RFA years (Johansen's contract). It says almost nothing about JG's since he has a different PPG than everyone else (to his credit) and different RFA rights (to his detriment).
Additionally, currently active contracts (assuming this "adjusting for inflation" is a thing) would already be adjusted for the same inflation as Johnny's potential contract.
Ie. Tarasenko's was just signed, and if another inflation amount was added, it's just compounding a contract that should already be calculated with inflation over the course of it considered (assuming you agreed Johnny and Tarasenko were equals).

I don't think it's reasonable for anyone to give up four first round picks in the modern NHL. You can't afford to give up four young, cheap, talented players. Especially not for a winger.
I say this as someone who's doubted Gaudreau from the beginning.

Those are those teams last four 1st round picks. I wouldn't give up any of those combos for Gaudreau.
Well, obviously... but somehow I don't think Gaudreau is signing with some garbage bottom 5 team. I would look at the types of players getting picked between 10-20 to paint a clearer picture. Chances are you aren't getting a top player there.

I love gaudreau, but you would be crazy not do take the oilers or leafs combo over him. Point is moot though because I doubt gaudreau signs an offer sheet with a team crappy enough to allow us to get top 5-10 picks for 4 years. So the quality of players you would be drafting would probably be much lower.

I mean if I'm those teams.
And nobody can absorb the loss of four 1sts. Phil Kessel was traded for peanuts because he made too much money and Toronto still needed to eat salary.
