I bet he signs for 8mil/yr. Straight up.
I think it's the right number and what he's worth every day of the week. It might even end up being a bargain in a few years. The Flames will only play hard ball so long with this one. I'm sure nobody in management has forgotten about the Martin St.Louis and Marc Savard days, and will not let something like that happen again.

I know they are different in the type of situation. But at the end of the day, two superstar players, ended up elsewhere, and not on the Flames for whatever reason.
If the Johnny's side ends up holding out and souring relations to the point where they have no other option than to trade him, the optics will be the same to the fans. The team didn't do what it had to, to keep a star.
I can't see the team letting it drag on too long if they are only 1.5 million apart. There are very few players out there that can bring 1/10th of what JG brings to the table, for that cost.
They'll find a way.
Edit: And I'd like to add, those situation were somewhat forgivable in the sense they peaked elsewhere. Knowing what we do now about JG? And the numbers he's put up in just two seasons? There is no "We never knew what he was capable of." crutch to lean on anymore.

I guess. But I would equate the situations more closely with Macinnis, Gilmour, Nieuwy etc

The key with the poll is 7 years, there is no way it is at or above 7.5 if it is 7 years. 7 to 7.25... in that range.

Really? 6.5??
And no, my votes coming in where it looks like the majority of folks here are on this. I believe Bingo had the best read on this.
Is there anyway we can see where Gaudreauvertime voted? There should have been a +$15MM/yr option.

That's quite the standard deviation going on in the graph. Which means 7.25.

It was 3 votes and 1% total of all the people who voted.
You could have a poll of what color the sky is and the color red will probably have more votes than that.

I voted 7.250 - 7.375 if they signed a 7 year deal.

This is not a comparable situation to the St. Louis days. We never gave him a proper chance.

Exactly. Many fans (myself included) could see that he was very talented but grumbled that the Flames gave him very limited ice time with plugs for linemates.

I agree. I recall the end of the season when St. Louis was called up and finished the year in Calgary and thought he was going to be an exciting up and coming player. And it wasn't just me, I remember some people in the media were saying he was a bright spot for the Flames future. Then when we let him go, fans were quick to dismiss it. I was pissed off.
While it's true that other teams passed on him after (Ottawa invited him to camp and let him go), we had him. Obviously the previous management saw something in him as well.
