I'm still waiting for that answer on why he even posts here when he clearly hates CP. I know I'll never get it, but I just can't sleep right without it.

Does anybody notice how his numbers slowly creep up? 8 million is going to be a bargain he says now.
I've already addressed the RFA / UFA splits several times.

There's typically good discussion on CP. I lurked here for a long time. I enjoy discussion even if it's with people who disagree with me.

I guess in your opinion it's only worth discussing with people you agree with?

It's my opinion that if you enjoy being somewhere, you should avoid insulting the community as a whole repeatedly.

And if you enjoy discussing things with people you disagree with, you could learn how to be less arrogant. People may end up enjoying discussing things with you too.

Look at actually competetive teams. Even if the Lightning manage to retain Kucherov, they need to say good bye to two or three of Johnson/Palat/Drouin/Bishop. They haven't even won a cup yet and their team is a year away from some inevitably crippling choices.

The Blackhawks since their recent cup have subtracted:

Patrick Sharp (Top Line W, RHS)
Brandon Saad (Top Line W)
Stephen Johns (Top ~3D for the Stars)
Teuvo Taravainen (Middle Six Skill W)
Andrew Shaw (Middle Six Power Winger)

If we could simply add those five players we would have the single best roster in the NHL. They let those guys go with nothing to show for it except some whatever draft picks/prospects. I didn't even name other Cap Casualties of theirs like Leddy and Byfuglien. It's highly unlikely any team can pull future stars out of a hat like they have every time there is a cap crunch. They did it in 2010-2015 almost miraculously, you can't bank on that kind of draft success within a contention window.

Every penny pinched will come in handy if and when a Tkachuk, Shinkaruk, Jankowski, Poirier, Jokipakka, Kulak, Andersson, Kylington, Mangiapane, Ferland, Pribyl, Klimchuk, Ollas-Mattsson, Gillies, Hickey or Parsons has a breakout season. That one million saved might be the difference between holding onto Mikael Backlund and sending him off.

I believe you need your money in the top of your roster and fill out the rest with ELCs. But Gaudreau is not Malkin or Crosby where he is an individual line. He needs a centre, and if the CP faithful are right he "needs" a bruising winger too to "protect him from cheap shots".

Crosby won a cup with Patric Hornqvist and Conor Sheary as his sidekicks keeping the top line's cap hit down. Do you see us winning a cup with a similarly paid top line? (Imagine something like Gaudreau-Backlund-Hamilton). Monahan is already making a 6.375M cap hit. If you want to keep the pair together then Gaudreau needs to be paid like a player that is a mutual beneficiary of the pair.

Gaudreauvertime, I'd like to know what you think Gaudreau's AAV will be when he ultimately signs. Let's say a 7 year deal.

I don't want to know what you believe he's worth, only looking for what you believe he'll sign for on a 7yr deal.

Great post and $8 M is too much for Johnny right now. And yeah you need to save every penny you can. But if he cripples the team at $8 M, the situation is not much different at say $7 M.

We need to extend Bennett now proactively to the best term we can get. Guys like Enoch Root might disagree but these pro-active extensions (Klefbom, Nugent-Hopkins, Barkov) are your best bet, not dilly-dallying until September. No way was Johnny's agent asking 8.0M a calendar year ago.

But the player had to want that too. Why would Sam extend before he's had a chance to improve his numbers? What's in it for him?

A bet that he makes more money than he earns in his contract year, just like the Flames are betting that he makes less money than he earns in his contract year.

If Barkov were signing now he would be a bigger free agent than Gaudreau.

You are kidding yourself if you think the Gaudreau camp would have been open to a value deal a year ago. JG does not lack confidence, he wouldn't have been signing anything last year if it wasn't big dough, he'd have opted to wait and rack up more data and points to justify a steeper contract.

Not sure I understand. He'd make the same since the new deal wouldn't kick in until the current deal expires

Why would I disagree to a good deal for the Flames?

But why on earth would Bennett sign right now?

If he signs, he won't get nearly what he would get after a good season.

And if he doesn't have a breakout season, he is better off signing a bridge deal than a long term deal.

There is no reason for him to sign now.

You could do a lot worse than Lindholm+Rakell for Gaudreau if they could be signed at the same price long term. Lindholm has as good a shot as any young d-man to win a Norris in the next 5 years, though it would be wildly impractical for Calgary to pay 4 guys like #1 D-men.

I wouldn't do the trade because we don't want Gaudreau to keep the Honda Center Curse alive from the other side, but the value is not bad at all, and probably favors the Flames.

Flames wouldn't be able to protect all their dmen if they got Lindholm. It is a dumb deal on multiple levels
