Or they could have just built a better team and had him retire a Flame.
I guess I just wish the Flames ownership & management would allow for this. Draft and/or keep your best players until they retire.
The Flames have sucked for a long time. The two names getting thrown around as bigger than the team in Gaudreau and Iginla are the main reasons Calgary has seen any playoff success in the past ~30 years.
Sure, the theory that trading your best player when his value is high might pan out, but cup champions don't really ever do that.

ah yes. It's been awhile since we've done this, Frank. I'm not sure I'm up for it tonight though.

That wasn't rhetorical.

That's not what I'm saying. The typical debate tactic I've had to slog through is the practice of "strawman" arguments. It's pervasive here. So I figured if I can't beat em, join em. Nobody else seems to have a problem with that method.

Can you prove this? I highly doubt this is true, unless he's talking a really weird bridge deal or a really awful long-term deal -- both of which would never happen.

Yeah but what do cup champions have to do with the late 00's early 10's Flames? We were brutal and our window was closed so hard that the glass shattered.
It was over.

He's talking about an RFA-only bridge deal.

I know, and that's what I was talking about. You can't bridge the guy who was 6th in scoring for 4.5M per

Why can't you?
Monetary circumstances change with different terms. $4.5 on a bridge isn't saying that Gaudreau's worth under $5m.

Sorry man, but there's little to no strawmen coming from this side. By and large it's people countering with numbers, math and comparables because we think you're overvaluing and underrisking what Johnny could be.
This isn't a fight or anything catty. It's a good debate that's probably helped us all understand the situation a lot better. You just happen to be on the side with the tiny minority. That can probably feel overwhelming at times but don't stoop to silly stuff like that. You believe in what you believe in. I won't knock you for it. Heck, I like it because it'd be crickets in here at best and panic at worst. I will debate you on it though because I don't agree with you.

I didn't say that anyone claimed Gaudreau was worth less than 5. Reread my post please.

^ Great post, Frequitude. I think what we all ought to remember is that even during debates like this, we're all fans. These arguments can get heated, or intense, but that's because people on both sides of the debates on this awesome site are very passionate and knowledgeable about the game. I'll continue to debate you, Gaudreauvertime, because I disagree with you, but there's no animosity here.

You've been awesome in my interactions with you. Logical, reasonable, and thoughtful. But there have been many others who have not been.
You're right though, no need to stoop. Apologies.

Yes, Johnny's RFA years. Not his value. Two different concepts.
