Iggy held out twice. Both times season began without a contract.

Cammalleri is the closest I can think and we just couldn't afford him. Sutter didn't tank the negotiation, he chose to sign Bouwmeester instead.
Losing Gaudreau would be literally unprecedented.
|
You also said "Edwards backed up the money truck". Some of those contracts were anything but. They were the product of very shrewd management negotiations.
Letting Cammalleri go was about perception of value. I think this board in general was not of the view he should make what he was asking for, though history is against us as he did well when he left.
They aren't losing Gaudreau. I'd say the worst case scenario is the Flames lose term, but also, they aren't giving up lockout-proof deals. And I'm fine with that.

Based on what? All we have from which to gauge the process of these negotiations are a handful of very vague statements made from all camps, all of which affirm that deals will be reached and that they will be long term.
There are literally no indications beyond the fact that the negotiations are complex and ongoing.

Okay. So years are the sticking point. The team likely wants 8, Johnny will want 5, they'll settle on 6 or 7 and be done with it now that they've created some urgency.

So what is the significance of not being able to talk again until October 1st seems gaudreau is taking all the risk by playing in the tournament without a contract especially with his size and some of these players out to make a name for themselves.

Nobody who's playing in the World Cup is "out to make a name for themselves". These are the NHL's elite. They want to be known for that. Not for being the guy who ended Johnny Gaudreau's career.

Based on the context of the conversation, I'm guessing a dick-measuring ruler.

Just for reference, during the 2012 NHL lockout. Crosby's agent told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that to insure the last year of his $7.5 million plus his 12 year $104 million contract that would kick in the following year and factoring Crosby's injury history would cost $400,000 per month in premiums.

I remember the outcome from Burke getting in front of a camera and talking bad about Baertschi. Why can't he just keep his mouth shut?

Are you saying Burke hurt Baertschi's feelings and he sulked his way into failure?

While I would also prefer it if Burke would refrain from posturing in the media and at STH events, the "outcome" to which you are referring here was pretty benign: that struggling, marginal player remains to this day a marginal player.

GOAT!

Personally, I think it's pretty awesome that a 23 year old kid on the verge of becoming a multimillionaire is willing to put everything on hold so it doesn't impact his play in an upcoming tournament.
That level of commitment alone should tack on an extra $250,000 to the final number.

I don't see any spot where Burke bashes Gaudreau or Monahan, or says anything remotely negative about them.

Burke is driving a hardline and it is probably based on Murray's instructions. This whole this is stupid and is driving an unnecessary wedge between our skilled franchise forwards.
Burke said at the meeting that he wants them to play hockey for a decent amount of money. The problem is that they are setting the tone of what decent is when these numbers and compensations are easily garnered from similar type players in the league.
Get the deal done.
