The whole "not doing my contract until after X" thing is so silly. The agent does most of the dirty work and probably has 30 minute update conversations with the player daily during the process.

I'm pretty bored of this negotiation to be honest. It should have been done already. Gaudreau is great, but we can't handcuff this team going forward for him.

Not going to panic or anything like that, but boy am I going to be disappointed if the two sides can't get a fair deal done by the start of the season.

Obviously, at least one side is being ridiculous in their demands which is maddening given the large number of comparable's there are to use throughout the league.

Especially with the standings so tight these day. Having your potential leading scorer miss camp and the first few games could easily be the difference between making the playoffs and no making them.

Maybe if we all panic together, the universe will compel Johnny to sign the identical Monahan deal and we all live happily ever after, until the end of his days.

Gaudreau kind of gets screwed by the CBA here. I wonder how much that is playing into the contract negotiations?

I mean he doesn't have Arb rights and has an extra year of RFA due to his birthday. Maybe that is prolonging the negotiations because he knows if he ends up with a shorter term contract an Arb would give him big money but if he signs 8 year wont make as much over his career.

So many different ways to look at this negotiation.

I still think he doesn't miss a game however...

JG made his own bed. He's lining up for "big money" a year earlier than he would have otherwise, at the cost of missing out on arbitration rights. He wasn't "screwed" by the CBA in any way.

Edit: Furthermore, he's at liberty to accept his qualifying offer right now and gain arbitration rights next summer -- same as he would have if he hadn't burned the first year of his ELC.

I guess screwed wasn't the right term, but more interesting position.

I still think that Kucherov and Gaudreau are just waiting on each other to sign. They're ridiculously comparable, so I can see both players' agents looking to make sure that they can match what the other one will make.

Thinking about what people have said regarding Johnny's agent pushing for his first superstar contract really makes me feel like we'll see a Giordano-like holdout. If I were him and Johnny was my first superstar client, I'd make sure (even if it was a losing battle from the start ) to go to bat for him until it's time to go home. Fight tooth and nail for every penny for him and go the distance. Raise a racket (WCH non-negotiating period), whatever it takes. That's what Johnny is trusting his agent to do while he concentrates on the hockey side - if the ask is not near what their camp wants, push back.

I agree that "time to go home" period for Johnny's camp would be the start of the regular season. He doesn't seem willing to sit out for games that matter.

But even then I'm not worried about the contract being an anchor. Gio held out... people were predicting 7.5, 7.25 etc for AAVs. The dream contract at the time (for me) would've been something like 6.75 for 5. We got 6.75 for 6 instead - I can't speak for others but that definitely made me happy. One year off.

Maybe we'll see a 6.75 / 6 for Johnny too - since Gio would be off the books at the same time, we could afford to bump him once contract is up for renewal.

I wouldn't read too much into one quote that his agent likely asked him to say. But didn't he stop being a babe of the woods when the team sat him for a game for off ice reasons?

When did this happen? I don't remember Giordano not playing because of a contract negotiation.

He went to Russia for a year when the Flames offered him a two-way contract. It's not a relevant comparable at all.
