Over 35 contracts, I believe, allow for bonuses.

For the type of money Johnny is asking for (likely) you have to play hard ball. I love Johnny, but a lot of folks on here are acting like Johnny's a lock to be a top 5 player in the league for the next 10 years.
As much as I think he might be, that's a huge risk for the team to be taking and committing cap wise at this point. If Johnny wants big big dough and term, Flames might be better off pushing him to a bridge to solidify him being the player we all hope he will be.
I've also never seen a fan base as scared of "upsetting" their players as we Flames fans are. We have wanted our management to walk on broken glass for some pretty mediocre talents over the years. I feel like there is a real inferiority complex going on here. Calgary is a great market and an organization with a strong reputation across the league for how it treats players............we don't need to act like we're the ugly duckling all the time.

Yeah. If a player is over 35 and signs a one-year deal, he can also get performance bonuses. Same with a veteran player under 35 who missed a considerable amount of time in the previous season.
Neither of those situations apply to Gaudreau.

Contracts with large signing bonuses are lockout and buyout proof, but bonus money is still subject to escrow. I'm not sure how they handle signing bonuses for suspensions.

I don't think term was ever the issue, jonny wanting to go out east is hugely overblown.
I do however think that they are apart on money though. Obviously the longer the term the more you gotta pay the guy.
I recall a few months ago Burke saying that if Jonny isn't signed by Sept it's strictly a money issue.

I have a feeling that Johnny is looking to get paid no matter the length of contract. I would not be surprised if he is asking for Taresnko money on a 6 year term and $8.5- $9 million on a 7-8 year term.

It does almost surprise me that if they are apart on money on a long term deal, then going for a 2 or 3 year bridge does make some sense. It gives both sides more certainty as to what he will be going forward.
If he did a 2 year bridge now, then he would have a 4 year sample to plan his next contract, which would still cover 3 RFA years.
If he is still a top 5 scorer for the next 2 years, I know I would feel better about committing 8 million + to him long term.

Sorry if it's been discussed already, when do players report to the World Cup? I would assume that's Johnny's deadline for negotiations?
All I can find online is that the first game of the tournament is on Sept 8th

The Fan morning show was speculating this morning that Johnny would be heading there this Sunday.

This is what a lot of people (probably including me) said when Gio was negotiating. Then the day after everyone was "OMG - so much money and term!"

Was that what people were saying? If anything people were scared of the term and dollars Gio wanted and definitely didn't want the Flames going $9M per for 8 years. Johnny is the opposite situation where we want the term and the dollars are key but if he breaks the bank we at least have him for his prime. Gio's new deal is pretty much all past prime years

For sure some were cautioning about term especially. But I saw plenty of people saying "give him whatever he wants - he's the best player/heart of the team".
Johnny is indeed the opposite, including the fact that, while he's been fantastic for two years, that's the extent of the track record. Gio had years of really consistent, upward trending play. I have faith he will be very consistent, but I think a lot of negotiations go off of comparables, and there's not very much in the way of two-year phenoms like Johnny.
BTW, I tend to think Gio's prime will be a fairly long plateau at the present level, so I'm not as concerned as some.

If so, he will be playing in Switzerland until he changes his mind.
$7.5M on a 6 year term only includes 1 year of UFA - a 6 year deal won't be anywhere near $7.5M

Pretty sure he wouldn't be playing anywhere other than Calgary when the Flames have his rights. It's not like they're going to allow him to play for another team.

Yah he can sign in Europe without issue. If he doesn't have an NHL contract.
