The team goes into the season hoping for playoffs. Playoffs is the cash cow for the hockey teams, if you got a chance you have to go for it. That's why teams like Calgary and Vancouver hung on so long with their poor cores, because even a slim chance was worth it.
If the Flames start losing without Gaudreau, that's his leverage. And it's not small. Both sides have a lot to lose by not getting the deal done.

So he doesn't lose money maybe? If he sits out, he doesn't make money you know.

Being in the US for the sake of being in the US isn't real IMO. Being under the radar (for certain players), or maybe tax advantages, are real factors.

Canadian teams make up 30 per cent of the franchises in the league. Only 10 per cent of star American players play on Canadian teams. Seems like a pretty clear disparity to me.
There are a variety of reasons why NHL stars prefer to play in the U.S. Climate, proximity to family (for Americans), taxes, media attention, ease of air travel (direct flights).

I think the bold is the real reason, not because their birth certificate says American. If you look at the Canadian Olympic teams, by my count, 80% of Canadians played for US based teams.
Your argument seems to be that all players would rather play in the US, not just Americans.
Edit: I don't think proximity to family is as strong a reason as the other factors.

I have no doubt that there is a general desire from US born players to play on US teams. However, using the WCH team as the means to calculate that is silly - far too subjective and too small a sample size.
What I think would make more sense is something like this:
1) determine the ratio of US born players
2) determine the ratio of US born draft picks on the Canadian versus American teams
2) determine the ratio of US players under 27 on the Cdn and US teams
3) determine the ratio of US players over 27 on the Cdn and US teams.
If there is a bias, it should be quite visible as you move from the number of US players, to the ratios where they are drafted, through to where the UFA-aged players are playing.
But no one probably cares that much.

They only make up 23% of the league, actually. And US star players disproportionately play in US cities because there are less star players from all nations on Canadian teams, hence the reason they were so bad last year.

Only 2 of canada's world cup roster play for canadian market teams, and one of them was jsut traded there and hasn't played a game in their jersey yet.
Sounds like a conspiracy.

And what percentage of the entire league's stars are non-American? And what percentage of those American stars have chosen to play for the team they are on (as opposed to being drafted or signing RFA contracts when in much the same position as Gaudreau)?
I agree with many of your factors - taxes, flights (for Eastern teams), lack of media scrutiny. But I don't think Americans have any great desire to play in the US just for the sake of being in the US.

Potential confusion: Chad Johnson is referred to as "Johnny" by Glen Gulutzan.

How exactly are they shafting him? What is your source?
I can make baseless claims too the other way with just as much merit as this.
Johnny threatened to Brad and Brian that he was going to streak through the children's hospital everyday until they signed him to an 8x9M deal, why would they sign such a classless individual??
See? This adds nothing to the conversation. I'm sure that they aren't offering him $3.5M a year over 8 years just as sure as I am that Johnny isn't threatening the above.
This thread sucks
