Not his decision, he's an RFA that cannot be offer sheeted.
If playing in the states mattered that much to him he would have spent another year in college and signed wherever he wanted.

This is so important to remember.
2 years ago he chose to give Calgary control over the next 7 years of his playing career for 1 RFA year of hockey (might even be just 1 year of entry level salary).
Nothing since then would have made that a negative experience. It's a pure money issue. It will settle out shortly. Without arbitration or offer sheet rights the only pressure point was training camp and because he got to play the World Cup as training camp the training camp point is that great.
So the pressure point is regular season games. This was really
no reason for him to sign before now.

I fully agree. I feel very confident that the issue on the contract is agreeing to financial terms. I don't even say that with an opinion on just how badly he wants to play closer to home, because I almist view the contract and where he plays as too separate issues.
In fact, if I'm JG and I'm set on playing elsewhere, I still think my best move is to sign the best deal you can (heck even better work in an NTC so you actually have full control) and demand a trade after.
Holding out or making a stink now to get moved actually seems harder and more risky that you only option becomes playing in Russia, even further from home.
So fir me I'm fairly convinced this is about money. And even if he signs an 8 year deal, I don't think that gives us the final confidence that he may not want to be closer to home before those 8 years are up.

This seems like a problem for eight years from now. Frankly, if he gives us 10 years of great hockey and then wants to go back east, I'll tip my hat and say it was a pleasure watching for the ten we got.

100% agreed, it's a later, if ever problem. Although I don't think an eight year deal means it can't be an issue before then.

If Carson Wentz keeps this up no way JG leaves Philly.

Even if it becomes an issue, the GM will handle it. I think Brad Treliving manages to get quite the haul for a contractually secured, mid-20s Johnny Gaudreau, given what he's able to do with pending UFA fringe players.

I agree. I also look at it in that when it comes to the money the management is trying tighten the screws too much. The difference between the two camps is substantial.
My random thought is that GJ is an accustomed winner. He doesn't back down; and he wants to be compensated based on his play. I don't think management can win and as Brian Burke said have him play hockey for a decent amount, they will have to accept that they will pay him market for his talent. The whole we don't want to pass Gio level of pay doesn't speak to this.
Also, into the regular season creates unneeded animosity.
