Point still stands. If what people were saying on here is right and they were saying that it'll take 10 million to sign Gaudreau then they're out to lunch.

So let's just be clear.
You are judging them for something you didn't even hear yourself?

Okay this comment and comments like these have gone relatively unscathed but it's time to cut the ####. This is business. The Flames stand to make an absolute monster amount of money due to Gaudreau. They'll sell jerseys, tickets, get eyeballs watching tv, give them a shot at playoffs that without him don't exist (ie. More revenue). On and on and on.
I find it exceedingly hard to believe that anything more than 1% of people on this website would take substantial discounts on gigantic multi million dollar contracts out of the premise of winning or "hometown discounts" or some other naive goodness of their hearts. Gaudreau is not from Calgary. He likes it, that doesn't mean he should swap out millions of his entire life's work, dedication, luck, tenacity, dedication and obvious sacrifice for a teams (possible, who knows???) potentially slight increased chance of winning- a premise of which is extremely debateable anyway.
I'm assuming you're from Calgary. Let's say you made it, got drafted by Nashville and did what Gaudreau has done. You like Nashville, and can see yourself staying there for awhile. You think your worth 8mm/ year, Nashville says here's 6. What would you do?????????? Don't bother even answering, because if it's anything than negotiating the best possible maximum dollar contract you can then you're simply full of ####.
Gaudreau doesn't owe us or the city or the flames a friendly donation because this is business.
Edit: and of course he's going to say he doesn't care about financials but obviously he does. Who wouldn't? Who would ever even believe that?

10 million for Johnny might be high but I'm starting to think that the problem here is that the 14 and change in cap space that Treliving has isn't going to be enough to get both deals done.
Maybe it's gonna have to be bridge deals. Can't afford them longterm until some contracts come off the books.

I never said I wouldn't negotiate if it was me. Obviously that is the smart thing to do. It's Just that he said he doesn't really care (which is one of the reasons he is so awesome). So if after he says he doesn't care and then he holds out, that would really piss me off and I don't think that is like him. So what I'm saying is based on his history and personality, I VERY MUCH doubt he is going to hold out.

Holy cricket. How about we don't trade Gaudreau?

If Gaudreau's camp expects the Flames to pay him like he is the best player in the world (which they might, we all seem to think he will be someday), then I can't see any way they would accept a long term deal that doesn't pay him 9+ million for his UFA years. They would probably expect around 7 million for his RFA years. Perhaps a 2-3 year bridge would be in the best interests of both sides? Johnny gets to prove that he is the elite of the elite, and then can get paid like it through all of his prime years, and the Flames take a way smaller risk by signing a more proven player. I can't see the Flames committing 8+ million per season long term to a guy who has only played 2 seasons. Johnny's camp will have to make the long term cap savings worth the risk (i.e. signing for ~7 million rather than 8 or 9+) if he doesn't keep improving.

Francis on 960 says that based on the people he has talked to, Gaudreau and the Flames aren't close to a deal.
Says he won't be surprised if he isn't signed before the World Cup.

He also said that Gaudreau is looking for a long term deal, and has given every indication that he wants to stay in Calgary.

Don't think he deserves any more than 7.5 a year. Love the guy and hope he gets locked down long term but in the back of my head I cannot help but wonder if there's an intent by the Gaudreau side to price himself out of range and perhaps try to make a trade out east for him.
Knowing how tight he and his family are, I don't know if a long term deal out west is what any of them want. If it was Johnny alone I think a deal would be done by now.

Not going to happen. Gaudreau has literally no leverage here. If he ever wants to play NHL hockey again, he is at the mercy of the Flames. There's no offer sheet to play with, or fear or UFA. If he doesn't sign a deal that works for the Flames, unless he wants to play in Europe for the next 5 years, he just won't play hockey.

A year ago, Gio was still a week away from signing his extension. Was he trying to force a trade to the Leafs?
