This is hard to find an exact date for Cam_wmh, because realistically, even the really bad teams are in it until the last 2-3 weeks of the season, but are likely eliminated from contention quite a while before an official elimination day for a variety of reasons. From what I recall of last season, the Flames still had a low percentage chance at the playoffs with Ramo in net. The moment he went down with a season ending injury, we were relying on garbage-version-Hiller and the inconsistent Ortio. I'm pretty sure the entire team packed it in at that point and we saw what was essentially "garbage time" that allowed Colborne to get a nice contract elsewhere this year.
So let's take the night of Ramo's injury, Feb. 11, as the unofficial playoff elimination date for the Flames and look at the splits:
Johnny
Gaudreau:
Pre Feb 11: GP-52, G-21, A-30, P-51. Basically 1 PPG
Post Feb 11: GP-27, G-9, A-18, P-27. Basically 1 PPG
* It should be noted that 1 game after the Ramo injury,
Gaudreau went on a 9 game point scoring streak, scoring 12 points. He was also -2 over that stretch. I'm not sure if he was trying to single-handedly will the Flames into the post season, or if he was playing all offense since we had no goaltending to speak of, but at least he gave it his all.
Here are the splits that really concern me for
Gaudreau.
Home: GP-40, G-23, A-33, P-56, +21
Road: GP-39, G-7, A-15, P-22, -17
Also
In Wins: GP-33, G-24, A-23, P-47, +33
In losses: GP-39, G-6, A-20, P-26, -27
When he's on, he takes over the game and is dominant. When he's off...which happens to coincide a LOT with being on the road, then he's less effective and really struggles to score goals. BUT, for what it's worth, the entire team has similar splits to
Gaudreau in these areas, so I wouldn't read too much into it.
How about looking at some other people who picked up a lot of points in meaningless games. Joe Colborne and Mikael Backlund are good examples.
Colborne:
Pre Feb 11: GP-44, G-7, A-12, P-19. Less than 0.5 PPG (0.43).
Post Feb 11: GP-29, G-12, A-13, P-25. Now a 0.86 PPG player...DOUBLE his previous levels.
* It should be noted that Colborne had just 5 points over his next 9 games after Ramo's injury. Somewhat OPPOSITE of what
Gaudreau did when the team was still mathematically in it. Joe capitalized in March and April, when the team was sunk and they were definitely in "garbage time".
Backlund:
Pre Feb 11: GP-53, G-8, A-18, P-26. Basically 0.5 PPG.
Post Feb 11: GP-29, G-13, A-8, P-21. Now a 0.72 PPG player.
No slight on Backlund because his best attributes aren't offense, but he also didn't put up his points when the team needed them most.
So what does all this mean? I don't know, you figure it out, but I thought it was worth investigating.
