Um, yes they are. Go check the poll results and look at where people I've been debating have been voting. Enoch Root, Cro Flames, Ryan Coke, Transplant 99, CalgaryFan1988, jemjey, Vinny01 and others voted that Johnny will sign for <7M. Cro Flames is at 6.5-6.625, Enoch and Ryan Coke from 6.75-6.875.
Those are the people I've spent almost all my time debating, and they fall in the minority (bottom ~14%)

Asked about Gaudreau. Nothing new says BT. I wonder if #Flames are discussing live without Gaudreau in the interim. Remains not close

Was Treliving and co in place when he first came? I'm just speculating as my co-worker brought that up this morning.
|
The burned year was at the agent's request, which is pretty common in college hockey.
I think that hurt Arnold a lot as he's out the door now without a third year to prove himself.
It gets Gaudreau to a new contract sooner, but also saddled him an extra RFA year to weigh down a long term deal.
Certainly wasn't a Flames ploy at all.

I love that CP's three most vocal Oilers fans all voted $8M+. They clearly think Gaudreau is already a superstar. Guess they've been burned by him enough already.

More likely they want the biggest cap hit possible.

Bill Arnold played a full four years of College hockey, his ELC was max two years. He burned a year of that, was a RFA last summer and signed his qualifying offer. He still eventually got the full two years, but had an NHL paycheck for a couple days as a bonus.
Wouldn't have gotten three years regardless.

Might not be the worst thing in the world to have him holdout and miss some time to start the season. Johnny would crack pretty easily I think, not playing hockey and not getting paid is a tough double whammy, could lower his price from what BT wouldve signed him to start the whole season.
The main risk is the Flames absolutely ####ing suck without him, but it would have to be truly horrendous to move the hammer back to Johnny's side.

Maybe, just maybe, you are overvaluing young Johnny.

Stamkos can't be a comparable. He could have been paid way more on an AAV if he chose to take it. He made a decision to take a lower AAV to play in a state where he'll earn the same cash in hand as if he were to have taken the higher AAV due to lower tax rates in Florida compared with Ontario.

Still 21 days to regular season. Once Russia beats Finland this afternoon Johnny will be on a plane to Calgary and they'll have a deal by the end of the month. Then there's still 12 days before the season starts.

He isn't our franchise players, he's one of many important pieces.
Thankfully the people in charge of this negotiations aren't worrying about such childish things. It's a business, they're doing business things. Maybe someone gets upset, but that'll happen, I truly doubt it gets to the point of someone being upset beyond repair.

I am sure the team knows how important it is this year to get off to a great start, and given their schedule for the first 5 games thats totally achievable. They won't let this drag into the regular season.

Same
I don't get this mentality of holding your ground. Of all the hills to die on. hold out situations are basically a guarantee for relationship souring and player being traded in a couple years down the road.

If there's a hill to die on, it might be overpaying a star winger. Lets learn from past lessons about how to build a team.
