Johhny isn't going anywhere. He lives for hockey and Calgary has the brightest future of nearly any team. If you were a young hockey star trying to win championships Calgary is a good bet. That will play a huge role in his decisions.
Philly and Boston will be bottom of the league/barely making the playoffs for a decade with their current status. No way does one of the best and most motivated hockey players choose to go to a bottom dweller.
If anything he's BSing for more money and thinking not a chance I'm going East. His name's Johhny Hockey not Johhny family.
You're a 26 year old UFA millionaire and top 3 in the league where do you go? Philly, Boston, Calgary? Only one is a contender, easy choice.

Friedman: Gaudreau negotiations will be put on hold during World Cup
Treliving has ''nothing new to report'' on Gaudreau contract talks
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/trelivin...t-talks~955320
also said that he expects the WCOH to have no effect on contract talks from both parties.

Trading a franchise player on the POTENTIAL of MAYBE having cap issues IF more than one of your top prospects pan out is stupid. As of right now you're trading a PPG player with best player in the league potential for a player that has a 40 point season under his belt and others that have zero NHL games.
Do it the Blackhawks way. Sign your cornerstones, worry about the rest when you have to. If we find ourselves in a situation where we have to make room down the line, thats a great problem to have and saving a 1-1.5 Million isn't going to make much of a difference at that point.
Sign him Brad. Sign him.

He'll get signed. But instead of signing him for extra, wouldn't it be better to sign him for a fair deal and have more money to spread around?

*potential franchise player
I, for one, don't want to pay a player for "what ifs". He's gonna get paid, no doubt, but a million here and a million there is another top six forward for the future. Paying a player for potential is Oiler territory IMO

And then when Smid, Bollig, Wideman and Stajan are off the books + Johnnys space we can really leverage our capspace to build a 4 line team. Each little 750k here or there will be the difference between a cup winner and a contender.

But it's not just 3 games.. These 3 games purely solidify his stance that he is among the NHL elite.. NOW! Not 2 or 3 years from now... Now... And has proven he can do it at the NHL level consistently by his performance over 160 NHL games and now the class of the world.
Pay him like it before you piss him off. I get he's a RFA and has no rights, doesn't mean he can't hold a grudge. He's a man first.
Just protect yourself or the team by making sure there's a limited NTC so you can dump him if an issue arises (lack of commitment.. Yeah right.. Or injury or whatever).
Give him the 8x8 now in trade for a limited NTC where he has to submit a list every year.

I can't believe people seriously think Gaudreau is deserving of an 8x8. Wow!

Right. He proved what kind of contract he's worth by those 160 games – not by the 3.

Yeah, I remember how Iginla wasn't signed by the start of the regular season that one time, and he held out and refused ever to play for the Flames again. Oh, wait…

Gaudreau isn't even eligible for an NTC for the next five years. If he doesn't pan out as expected, there will be plenty of time for the team to trade him before then. This really isn't a bargaining chip that an NHL club would pay extra money for.
