I have 97 Civic EX with just under 200K km that I am considering selling. There are some dents in the door, but the car runs well...am I crazy thinking that I will get $3500-4000 for this car?

I think you are in the ballpark, but be prepared to take a lil less due to the excess KM and the dents. selling price should be in the $3000 - $3500.00 range. might want to talk to Johnny Flame, that vehicle sounds like it might be right for him

I'm sure it's posted in here somewhere but I don't have time to look through 36 pages.

What is the best month to buy a car? Also, would it be better to buy at the end of a month?

If you are looking for new...then now would be a good time but my friend, Tim can probably answer that question better.

If you are looking at used, then it really doesnt matter. as the owner of a previously owned car dealership, you can buy a used vehicle any time and get a good deal. Used car dealerships dont have a month end quota to meet at least not at mine. I dont care what time of the month it is, we will price our vehicles the same way and negotiate the same way.

i would be worried if they didn't let you have it if you were interested, private sale can be risky, if they are hiding something, VIN via carfax etc is where you find those things out

This has probably been asked before, but is there any advantage to leasing a vehicle vs. financing one for tax purposes? I need the vehicle for work.

It basically works out the same.

On a lease the max is $750 per month plus tax if you are at 100%

on a buy it is 15% the first year and 30% on the declining balance on the following years.

Sorry just to clarify.

If I were to lease a car for $300.00/mnth I could write the entire thing off = 3,600/year

If I were to buy a car for 20k, I could write off 15% of the total value in the first year = $3,000.00, and then 30% from then on?

If you are at 100% write off eg. use the vehicle exclusively for business.. Most people aren't

also it is plus tax

on the buy side . It would be $3000 first year.
$5100 year 2
$3570 year 3
$2499 year 4

again only if you are at 100% write off.

If you are at 80% business use then you would get 80% of amounts. With a lease for write off purposes you are better to take the highest payment you can cashflow to maximize your deduction as you can't deduct the down payment

I'm considering the lease option. Can you haggle down a lease payment or are these set in stone?

the lease payment is made up of 3 parts.

Capitalized cost
REsidual Value
Interest Rate

If you can lower any of those you can get your payment lower. Rate and residual are generally set by the finance company and can't be changed. So if you can get them to drop the price of teh car the payment will go down. as a rule of thumb every $1000 drop in price will drop payment 20-30 per month

Don't you usually want the residual value to be as high as possible, in order to lower the payment?

Also, I've been able to move the residual with Ford. Honda wasn't able to, and that was with talking to the fleet manager.

I am thinking about getting a used Ranger in about 6 months and was wondering what are the pros and cons of buying from a used car lot vs private sale. I'm thinking in the $5K-$6K range. Any advice on this particular vehicle? Just wanted an expert opinion. It would be used for light loads (mainly yard work, landscaping stuff).

Thanks.

A ranger, eh? Keep in mind with those if you buy say a 2005 it's basically no more modern than a 96. I don't know how ford has gotten away with leaving rangers the same for so long without updating them in any meaningful way. Do yourself a favour and compare it against a Toyota (actually drive both not just on paper). The Toyota is so far superior it's amazing.

I just finished a four year lease on a ranger through my business last year. We are rocking a Tacoma now and it is 10x better with lower payments.

Good point. I would love to get into a tacoma. I've been looking online at kijiji and craigslist and it's very rare to find a tacoma for my price range. I'll keep looking though as it seems it might be worth the wait. Any other good places online or otherwise that I should try to find a tacoma?

Thanks for that.

Thanks for all the help so far.

So far these are my options

Hyundai Accent GL Sport - Great low interest rates on financing (1.9 on 4 year), but poor lease rates (7.9). By far the cheapest vehicle of the 3 options at 18.5k after GST/PST.

Honda Civic - More expensive than the Hyundai, but much better performance. Also the 4 door option is appealing, and lease rates are considerably lower (2.9%). Most expensive at 22k plus PST/GST

Pontiac Vibe - Mediocre Lease Rates (4.5-6.5%). Total for package with power locks, air conditioning etc... 19.5k plus PST/GST

Leaning heavily towards the Civic at this point. Seems to be a substantially nicer drive than the Hyundai and the low lease rate is really appealing.

Does anyone have any experience with the Accent Sport vs. the Civic? Am I sacrificing a lot by going with the Hyudai?

I vote for civic all the way. I would also buy a Nissan versa hatch before i'd get an accent. Accents just never seem to age well and their resale is pitiful.

A neat cheap car I've been liking (but never driven) is a cube if you're looking for something that can be versatile and make everything else on the road look boring.

But to your original question, the civic is the far superior car of the three your considering.
