When people say 'he didn't write it down the way I said it' after they say something embarrassing that gets them in trouble, what they mean is 'he didn't write it down the way I realize now I should have said it.' Or maybe 'the way I meant it.' Most reporters record everything, even phone conversations. And every time I'm familiar with when someone said they were misquoted, the reporter's record showed that they were just trying to cover their ass.
The thing people need to be wary about when talking to the media isn't that they'll be misquoted (which is illegal and will get a reporter fired). It's that the reporter will capture
exactly what they say - even if it's ill-considered and embarrassing.
