Yup. They’re gonna lose that trade like everyone who’s ever traded a franchise player. Except maybe the Lindros deal.

Mercer is having an alright season this year on pace for a career high 56pts but is coming off 2 seasons of 33 and 36pts over full seasons. His value was higher 2 years ago than it is today.
Nemec is having a bit of a breakout so I could see him being someone the Devils try and keep and they could try with Casey or Silayev instead but the Nucks will want picks as well. I think Hughes pushes the Devils to near the top of the league so those 1sts would be late.

Can't imagine the Devils up the rumored offer of Mercer + Nemec + 1st. Take it or leave it Canucks. If you get more elsewhere that's fine, we'll sign him in 2 years and keep our guys

Would be genuine malpractice from Fitzgerald if he doesn't make this happen. This is where it's sometimes more fun seeing trades in the NBA or NFL where GMs are wild. Who cares if it's an overpay, you famously have a surplus of young D prospects, go get the 2nd best D man on the planet and worry about losing some fun prospects later.
Mercer, one of Nemec and Silayev, 1st, conditional 1st, whatever man. Your core are mid 20s, you swing this and you have a 4-5 year window of being scary.
Except for the goalie tbh...

The Blues fans had similar feelings about Tkachuk when they lowballed the Flames because Matthew wanted to go home.
Frank mentioned a team like the Blackhawk’s entering the mix and being able to put a huge offer on the table. Quinn gets to go to a major market and play with Bedard for the rest of his career and the Devils left wishing they did more.

I don't know that gives you two years in order to be a contender - seems to me as though those are two pretty valuable years - especially since there is no guarantee that he will sign in New Jersey. I think that you have to swing for the fences when you have the opportunity to do so.
What Hughes gives is one of the best defenseman on the trade market in the salary cap era - between him and Karlsson when he was traded from the Senators. If you put him onto any very good team he automatically makes them into a contender for the next two years, and without any trade protection that makes him a very appealing target.

It would however, elevate the Flames to being a potential playoff team for the next couple years, until Kadri and Coleman are gone or faded.

The Canucks are terrible because the rest of their team is deeply flawed. You have a lot of complementary forwards (Boeser, DeBrusk, Garland) with no one who really drives the play, aside from potentially Pettersson, who is often injured and has entire seasons where he underperforms. The defense was supposed to be the area of strength but they have been underwhelming so far. Their elite goaltender is injured all the time and the expensive backup has regressed from his performance last year... with no one in the pipeline.
In general... one player can't make a team good but I think that one player can make a good team great.

The two teams have already talked framework.
NJ isn’t looking to wait 2 years and maybe get him then, they want him now.

Thinking like #3-6 prospect depending on who they're willing to give up and how good their prospect pool is. If it is a terrible one, we better be getting their best prospect in return.

Nelson was in relation to Kadri not Andersson. I guess i didnt make that clear. I was talking about the Flames moving both.

Fitz probably has a lot of pressure on him to turn this season around too, ship seems to be sinking in NJ.
Doesnt help Marky turned into a pumpkin again this year too.

Does anyone know when the Flames' rookie dinner is this year? That would've been some good content for The Chase YouTube series.
I'm guessing it's a 3 way split this year with: Parekh, Kuznetsov, and Honzek.
With a couple of maybes if they're re-called/stay with the team in: Kerins, Morton, Gridin, and Brzustewicz. Maybe even Klapka, if he was on the Wranglers when they had last year's rookie dinner.

The Wings will be in on this. They need a big swing to get over the hump, and have loads of prospects (including a potential top-2 C in Danielson) and picks to make it happen. Hughes has connections there too - he played college hockey in Michigan, his parents live there, and he’s close friends with Larkin.

There's an outside chance that we get lucky, and Rasmus gets a better offer from whoever is the bridesmaid for Hughes.

I think Hughes goes in the summer, not during the season.

How did the Oilers make their trades happen? I was told you can't trade anyone until closer to the deadline.
