Don’t look for shortcuts like every Canadian team always does.

I think this is a perfectly fair take and very reasonable approach. I am just not convinced it is realistic with our team

It lacks nuance. If I can get a 20 year old player I would have drafted 16th OA do I spend a 27th OA to get him? Why not. I'm not trying to accelerate a rebuild - I'm simply acknowledging that a late first is magic beans.

In your scenario, draft position means little.
Why is that player being traded for a 27th? His value has clearly dropped/things aren't going well. Even if he does become a bit better as a Flame, does he have the ceiling our scouts/development wants - or is it trying to just rush NHL youth into the line-up?
Why not take our 27th, draft a player and take a swing? We don't need to expedite the arrival of more players into the NHL. Draft, develop.

It will be something worth worrying about if they make a move to improve the team.

Even then if the move makes sense I am not sure it is anything to worry about at all?

Well I took your post to mean you were worried about the Flames taking shortcuts, I was just saying that we should worry about it if they ever make a move to improve the team. 3 years into Conroy and that has never happened in a serious way.

For the right young player I am not against it. I am not against the ComixZone take either.
If there is a young stud available via trade who can be a long term piece on this team I am not necessarily opposed to Conroy using assets to bring in that player.

Yeah if there's a high caliber 22 or younger (preferably C or LD) available, and its good value (a late 1st), why not?
I don't really see the downside. It's not like a Mintyukov or Helenius is going to instantly turn your team around next year, but it's a good value add to your core to build around.

Sharangovich was before the real tear down began.
I see Frost and Farabee as an asset management trade rather than a shortcut trade. I’ll beat Frost returns better than the 2nd they gave up.

In your scenario a young player who has made the NHL is worth less than one who might. And I really don't see any single player getting the Flames further up in the standings over the next two years. They have a good 2C I. Kadri and they are at the bottom. And in my scenario they are also getting rid of Kadri, Andersson, Coleman etc. no 20 year old is making up for that loss

If I said it was a high second round pick you are giving up does it make a difference? And if so, I say the odds of a 27OA pick being a great player versus a 33rd are probably not much different.

I don't really agree that acquiring young players will make us too good, or at least I hope it won't, since I'm sure we will be acquiring players as parts of the return for our vets.
But I do think we should be making draft picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds, unless something really astounding becomes available

Having a guy like Mckenna at the top who openly wants to play in Calgary, along with a guy like Dupont in next years draft who is from here, could be massive. The jersey sales for either (or both) of those guys would be off the charts imo
