Default Samsung Galaxy S (the S is for Sexy)

I got a chance to check one of these out first hand on the weekend, and I have to say- to me it is the first great rival to the iphone.

At first look, it almost even looks like an iphone, but it is lighter, and surprisingly slimmer. The screen is beautiful, I dont know the res but must be higher than iPhone 3Gs, and apparently it doesnt require a screen protector. My friend told me it has one built in.

Now, I dont know if this part is true, but he also told me that in addition to being able to dl a ton of android apps, that it will also do itunes apps. Is this true?

If so, I think this phone likely trumps the iPhone 3GS, which IMO is better than the 1st version of iphone 4.

Maybe this could have gone in the Android thread, but I thought this is a major breakthrough for android, and is the first Android phone I've seen that I am legitimately jealous of. Thoughts? Can anyone tell me for sure about the app thing?

I played with the phone for maybe one minute at the mall yesterday and I really liked that swipe text stuff. Too bad this is only a Bell phone (I think). If it was Rogers I think I would jump on the Android wagon.

Rogers has their version coming out this month. Only difference is the Rogers one won't have the front facing camera, just one camera on the rear.

It doesn't run iPhone apps, it would have to be running the iPhone's OS to do that (or have a emulation layer).

The Galaxy S's screen is 800 x 480, and the 3GS's is 480 x 320 so yeah it's better than that. The iPhone 4's is 960 x 640 (and is half an inch smaller, so things look even sharper), but the Galaxy S uses a different technology that is pretty impressive from what I've read (180 degree viewing angle).

Seriously? Have you used one? Honest question, I'm not trying to be a prick ... just that anybody I know that upgrades is in love.

No I havent. I based my opinion on the fact the reviews and buzz have been bad, and the people that I know who have had a chance to check it out all basically say the 3GS is more solid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the iPhone 4 is superior in many ways, but 1st generation products usually have too many bugs to work out, and IMO its better to go with the perfected version of the predecessor.

There is no doubt in my mind the iPhone 4 will be better... just not right now.

The 3GS is more solid than the 4? That's the biggest pile of garbage I've ever heard.

The 3GS and 4 run the same OS, so they both suffer the same bugs.

How so? I'm actually asking... not challenging.

iPhone 4 has that terrible hardware issue though.

There are not many bugs in this OS to begin with. Either way the 4 just does everything the 3GS does, but faster... and with the sharpest screen on the market and the best camera on the market. Excluding the antenna issue (which is a hardware problem anyway) there are no "bugs to work out" in the software.

It's not terrible though. The media says it's terrible. Consumers seem to disagree.

Beyond the antennae issue (that many who have the phone don't seem to notice) I'm not seeing too much out of the phone that makes it less solid or buggy. It's faster, thinner, higher resolution, has HD and front facing cameras. I don't see much room for the 3GS to compete there.

Yeah I was mostly talking about the hardware... no big deal.

Anyways... this isnt an iPhone 3GS VS iPhone 4 debate thread, its a Samsung Galaxy S thread!

Galaxy S is a great phone, don't really like the look of it but super AMOLED screens have insane black levels and really nice contrast. The UI is still crappy, though. I'd love a 4" super AMOLED phone with HTC Sense. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

The Galaxy S is coming to lots of carriers.

Bell, Telus and Roger should all be getting it eventually.

If I recall I think I read a review saying that this is probably one of the best phones that's not an iPhone. I'll try and find it...

http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-gal...eview-2891746/

Can Android phones be synched up to iTunes? I use my iPhone as an MP3 player at the gym so ideally I would like my next phone to have some ability to synch with iTunes and have a decent music application in the phone.

Are there any standouts with this over the Desire? I was having a hard time keeping everything sorted out when the Nexus One came out. It feels like there's been 50 phones released since then.

I have one... it's awesome... my only complaint is the somewhat low battery life, but if you charge it nightly you're fine.

Very nice screen. I'll summarize it like this: it's all the iphone is without Apple's handcuffs. Enjoy.

That is all.

Main advantage of this over the Desire/N1 is a bigger, much more vibrant screen. User interface is the only real con I have with this phone. That said, Samsung's UI is about as close to iOS as you'll get on a stock Android phone, so in that sense it's a good phone for someone jumping ship from iPhones.

Stupid question alert:

Do all the android phones have different UI's? I thought it was consistent across all the phones. Wrong?

It's the same operating system, but they're "skinned" by the phone makers. Samsung, HTC, Motorola each change the UI to differentiate their phones. Some are better than others.
