London student protests getting out of hand
Parliament passed a bill permitting UK tuition fees to rise to as much as 9,000 pounds per year today.
As has happened over the past several weeks, there have been serious students protests today.
Whitehall and Parliament Square has been subject to widespread broken windows, graffiti (including the statue of Winston Churchill), fires. Several police and protesters are in hospital with serious injuries. Anarchists have attacked the car of Prince Charles and Camilla. Protesters have smashed the windows of the flagship store of Top Shop at Oxford Circus in the middle of busy Christmas shopping. They've also attempted to burn down the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square.
Mayhem!

To be clear, it's not a 9000 GBP increase, it's an increase from the current maximum level to a maximum of 9000.

This is what happens when you increase student tuitions by as much as three times. Seriously... the UK has to be seriously broke now if it has to resort to sacrificing the education of future tax payers to save a few bucks now.

Oh, thats much different. I thought they were tacking on another 9000 quid to tuition which is pretty massive.
What is the current maximum? Is it a big jump?

The current maximum is 3290 GBP.
I'd be rioting if my tuition went up 200%

It's more a function of governments having spent more than what they have for the last (not so little) while.
"Austerity" is going to be happening/has been happening to more countries and departments than just student tuition.

So is general tuition for the average going to 9000?
If it is then that is high, if that is the max for a specialty like Engineering etc then not so much.

University tuition is an incredibly ignorant place to raise funds in then name of "austerity".
It's like getting your toe and finger nails removed to save on the cost of nail clippers.

I'd imagine you could make the case for lot of other areas they'll have to cut as well.
A few weeks ago it was the increasing of the retirement age - "omg, think of the old people."
At some point it will be the healthcare - "omg, think of the sick people."
Or social programs - "omg, think of the poor, downtrodden people."
It's never fun when you have to cut funding, especially when it as much as they apparently need to.

Goodbye euro welfare states, hello reality. The old tuition cap was ridiculously low compared to elsewhere.

They should just go study in Germany. I believe it's still free tuition over there.

I dunno. might be smart. I've never understood why tuition is so heavily subsidized, and yes, I graduated with a mountain of debt too. even then I argued if tuition reflected cost my degree would be worth more.
Education is beneficial. I get that. But if free or super subsidized education is more beneficial, why don;t the countries that offer that kick everyone else's ass?

.....for Germans. Most people living in the UK do not hold German citizenship.
This is about $15,000.00 Canadian dollars? These riots aren't totally without merit.

England seems to me to be a place where a large % of those students will be working outside of England.
I have always wondered why not tax students who leave the country for the true cost of the education.

Not for long - if they have to bailout all the PIIGS countries who have been spending like crazy for years.

I guess if one has gotten used to the price being much lower. What is the total actual cost of University there?
For example, if the total sum cost has been actually $50K per year and everybody got used to a $5K price ($45 being picked up by the government/tax payer.) It's still $50K now, but students are being asked to pay $15K now because there simply isn't enough money to go around. $5K to $15K would suck to adjust to - but where exactly should the difference magically come from instead?

The people are speaking and being ignored. What else are they supposed to do when TPTB don't listen. These cost increases are rediculous. Imagine a rent increase doubled for the year. I paid 5000 this year and next it'll be 10 000. I'd start speaking and if I was ignored...
England is already ridiculous to live in price wise.
