Google goes anti-piracy
Link
Quote:
The New Measures "We'll act on reliable copyright takedown requests within 24 hours," writes Kent Walker at the Google Public Policy Blog. "We will prevent terms that are closely associated with piracy from appearing in Autocomplete." Walker also notes that "we will be working with rightsholders to identify, and, when appropriate, expel violators from the AdSense program," and that "we will experiment to make authorised preview content more readily accessible in search results." Walker explains that "these changes build on our continuing efforts, such as Content ID, to give rightsholders choice and control over the use of their content."

Hmm... so they think people who pirate will have a harder time finding their content? IMO Piracy has widdled down almost completely to torrents, and really, you have to have some level of computer literacy to work torrents.
I think all this does is make Google less valuable to a large segment of its users. People who torrent aren't going to all of a sudden stop pirating stuff because Google doesnt show it hahaha.

I dunno, there are tons of sites like sendspace and megaupload that seems to have quite a lot of pirated content, so it's not just torrents.

That's fine, I don't use google as a median to pirate anything anyway.
I get that they're sending a message but this doesn't really change anything.

I dunno about torrents being the only place people pirate stuff now. Megaupload, Sendspace, Zippyshare, Filefront, etc. all are big hubs of pirated material still.

Yeah, there are loads of sites with pirated content. Apparently it is illegal to host pirated content, but not to view, or am I wrong?
Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how I can get a proxy address (someont told me thats what I need) so I can view content on CBC/CTV that is only accessible to Canadian residents?

Yeah, all that FACT garbage drives me mad. I was watching two episodes of Arrested Development a night over the past few weeks and had to sit through a load of warnings every time.

Would it still be pirating if I pay for Shaw, but because I don't have a PVR, I always miss shows like Conan and The Big Bang Theory, so I go and download the episode? I guess it might be since now I'm not subjected to any of the crappy commericals.

Yes it is. If you miss a TV episode, normally you'd have to buy the season on DVD or whatever to watch, or buy the episode on iTunes. Getting the episode for free online and being able to watch it off your hard drive for all eternity isn't legal unless the publisher already gave it out for free.

What about PVRing it? I could watch it whenever, and I didnt pay for it. Granted the commercials stay on.

i think TV shows fall into a grey category, since if you're paying for cable you are paying for access to the shows. if it was strictly illegal, why haven't we heard of any crackdowns like the RIAA and MPAA going after users? besides, given that most networks now stream full episodes of their shows on their websites, i don't think it's that high of a priority for them
if the no commercials aspect and watching whenever you wanted were actually wrong, then you wouldn't be able to watch shows on something like Shaw Video on Demand

I would imagine that this is one of those precursors to Google entering the market to distribute TV and movies. This is a little wink and a pat on the rear end of the industries that says "See - we take piracy seriously. Now we want to sell your stuff. Let's talk."

Even worse is when you have a PVR, set it to record, and find it didn't.

Which came first the pirating or the warnings? I blame the pirates.
But then who came first? The industry who took raped and pillaged the content as their own or the pirates because they didn't believe in how the industry was run? I blame the industry.

I'd also like to add that ultimately, it's up to movie studios and whoever else to compell me to buy something.
I still buy blu-rays of movies I really love... but I've downloaded stupid movies that I would maybe normally rent because they aren't even worth the $7 for 1 night anymore.
I'm more inclined to join something like netflicks myself, but again... pirated stuff makes its way to the net earlier... I dont want to wait!
