What is there in the way of streaming content available in Canada? It doesn’t interest me as a unit for my personal media, as the AppleTV does that for me, but if there was compelling content available online that Boxee could access in Canada, that would be interesting.

I think the content side of things is just a smoke and mirrors distraction for the ability to play downloaded media.
My interest is in seeing if this unit will present a better UI than the WD HD boxes.

Boxee has Center Ice, doesn't it?
Do any of these boxes have Sunday Ticket?

It is, that's why I haven't bought the WDTV Live. You can actually try out the interface here by downloading the software and just trying it on your computer:
http://www.boxee.tv/
I like the interface, and I really like that you can mark something as "watched" if you're in the middle of watching a TV series.
I'm impressed that the WD player plays anything you can throw at it, but at the same time so will boxee and you can search and sort based on categories too.
I think the interface for Boxee is just a lot more refined as well as functional and I think I'll pick one up the day it's released.
Edit: I'm curious, why are you a little worried about it being from D-link?

Probably because D-Link is bottom of the barrel when it comes to network gear.
Spending $39.99 on a D-Link router that may or may not see its second birthday is one thing. Dropping $200 on a D-Link and having the same concerns is another.

That's odd to hear that....I have owned several D-Link routers and switches. Never had a problem with any of them.

The switches I have pretty good luck with, but the routers seem to die on me like they are the goldfish I bought for my daughter.

Ugh.. I've only used Linksys routers which I figured were the bottom of the barrel.
Well hopefully D-link isn't such a steaming pile of crap when it comes to media centers because out of all the players, I think the boxee interface is the best and the remote looks great as well.
I will still probably pick it up, you can pre-order at Futureshop for $199 right now, not sure if it'll be $229 in store.

Weird, are you guys buying the cheaper ones? I've had to d-link routers in my time, both were designed for the gamer in mind and both north of $100. The latest one I'm using is the d-link gamer lounger wireless router. About $180 and has given me awesome performance.
I guess netgear is the brand most use then?

My last router that died after about a year, was a not quite top of the line, dual band N router that ran me $130. The one before that was a cheaper G model, that could never maintain a wireless connection and I would constantly need to power cycle it to resolve the issues. Both were D-LINK.
At work, we just got a D-Link DIR-655 for one of our low use connections and it has been quite good for the last couple months. Will see how long it lasts. We also use quite a few of the older D-Link switches and they seem to hold up much better than the older Linksys (pre-Cisco) models that we have as well.
Right now at home, I use a Linksys WRT-160N that I picked up for $60 2+ years ago and I have only once had to reboot it because when I added my O!play it was causing havoc with the network.
I have never heard a good thing about Netgear equipment, so I tend to stay away.

It’s got nothing to do with performance. Come talk to us in two years (or less) when the thing has become an unreliable, flaky piece of junk. When they work, sure, they work as well as anything else out there. But they don’t work reliably for long. I’ve owned them, I’ve sold them, and I’ve looked after countless D-Link powered networks for friends and clients, and inevitably the stuff goes flaky.
That being said, their Green line of products seems promising, but any of that line that I’ve deployed is still under a year old (hey, sometimes you need something cheap and today, so you use what’s on the shelf), so it’s too early to tell.

Yeah, D-Links work out of the box but are seriously like designed to fail after 1 year or something.

So how does Boxee work? Is it a subscription based operation or pay per view?
Looks like the movies are PPV, do the tv shows contain commericals.
