The History of Hockey Video Games
There have been alot of arguements about which game is better these days, and to stray from that let's have a look back and see how far Hockey video games have come!

"Ice Hockey" for the Nintendo.. the one where you can have the bench clearing brawls and Blades of Steal... two classic video games I remember from my youth. I think most guys around my age remember the classic opening on BOS "Blades.. of STEEL.. ching ching ching"
Great.

I agree, the Blades of Steel theme music sticks out to me as much as the original Mario Bro's theme.

They had some pretty bizarre commentary from that game hey?
Ever now and then I swear they would yell out "huck patrol" for no reason whatsoever. Ah well, the fights were great.

i liked Blades of Steel from Nintendo. I preferred the arcade game but when you play the nintendo version it doesn't take long to get hooked. I loved playing other people. When playingthe computer it got to a point where it was impossible to lose. The hardest part about the game was goaltending. The rink was on an angle were it was hard to stop the puck from going into the net. It looked like you had the net covered, but on such an angle it was to hard to tell. Scores would be very unhockey like 12-9 kinda stuff. Though I had a friend and we both were awesome. We would play each other all the time the average score when we went head to head was 2-1 3-2. iIm proud to say I had one shut out in my career playing that game. iA shut out was almost impossible to get. I also found the perfect shot. If you shoot on a angle towards the side of the post it always goes in. We used to ban the perfect shot cause it was impossible to stop.

Just going through the list again. It is amazing to see the first NHL Hockey game.. they have come along way since that game for the Sega Genesis... then NHLPA Hockey 93... the one where you can make Grezky's head bleed.. ha! Amazing to think they guys at EA Sports haven't taken a year off from doing those games in over 10 years.

I was in class on day a few years ago, and we were just chatting about video games
Prof: What's the greatest video game ever made?
I yell out "Blades of Steel"
Prof: FINALLY Someone answers that question properly!
Blades of Steel my all time favourite game

Blades of Steel is one of the best Video Games ever. Truly a classic. I've got such fond memories of playing it. I might have to play that one tonight when I get home from work. I also have to agree about the music in that game. Its in my head right now.
Of course the games from today are pretty good as well. Seeing as how I keep buying them every year. There must be something I like about them.

But it had their advanced "mode 7" graphics.
I agree, I owned that game, it was no fun and just gave me a dang headache.

I was a huge fan of the first Wayne Gretzky one especially when it was combined with the league package. It was way ahead of its time
Except for the lack of fighting

I loved the Intellivison Hockey when it came out. I employed a kind of neutral zone trap to frustrate my opponents. B)

PowerPlay was one of the best for its time. Very real "feel" to the game.

I had Ice Hockey for Intellivision, as well as Slapshot (penalty shots were slapshots from the blueline) for the C64, Wayne Gretzky Hockey for the Amiga (first decent league SIM in addition to an ok game) the usual BOS and Ice Hockey for Nintendo, then all the EA games for Genesis.
Some of those early were fun because it was a hockey game, but frustrating becuase it wasn't really hockey.
Great link.
