Icon40 Pens send Getzlaf to the Kings in an unexpected deal

In a deal that even surprised himself the Pens have sent Ryan Getzlaf to the Kings in return for Tomas Plekanec and Stephen Weiss. The Pens also sent heavy hitter Cal Clutterbuck and prospect Justin Schultz. The Pens get a 2012 2nd as well.

This was not a move I wanted to make but in the end the offer was too good to turn down. We lost a star center, but in return we got two legitimate NHL 1st line centers; both of whom can play on both ends of the ice. We felt with the unpredictable sim you can never have two much depth and this makes us very strong up front. We now feel that we have 3 lines that can provide offense for us.

It was tough sending Getz packing but, it is nice too add two solid 2 way centers; especially Pleks who is a personal favorite and just happens to be having another great NHL year.

That's good value for Getz.

I like this deal for the Kings...Plekanec and Weiss are good talents but Getzlaf is an elite talent. Also Weiss keeps showing good things only to fall back.

If you add the two deals (Pleks, Weiss to LA and then Pleks, Weiss out of LA) then the deal looks really nice for the Kings.

Well done.

Turns out to be Getz and prospects going to LA and both the Sedin's leaving. Not so sure I agree with your logic.

I think that these moves are better for the Kings next year and beyond, more so than immediately. Plus if they need to, they can always get someone later on.

I'm very excited with this deal! I had to decide who to keep between the Sedins, Luongo, and Boyle as all would have max contracts next year; at least 2 had to go. Boyle has been playing extremely well and moving Luongo isn't something I want to do this year.

I feel that with the depth on my LW I could afford to send some packing to get a legitamite elite centre who isn't going to be a UFA anytime soon. Clutterbuck is also a player I've targeted as a must for my third line.

I think both teams got exactly what they needed in this trade and both are quite satisfied.

I think this is a fair trade. Goffie always trades to get his Hab players. Good value for Getzlaf I suppose but I personally would of held onto him.
