Caged Heat - Women Behind Bars

The inmates at the female penitentiary include women serving sentences for murder, drug dealing, and kidnapping. But there are also about 50 children, living inside the prison with their incarcerated mothers.

Photographer Caroline Bennett stepped inside the prison walls to see what life was like within Santa Martha's gates.

I feel real sorry for the children born inside that prison. Imagine the culture shock at age 6 when they finally get a view of the world outside those prison walls.

So mothers raise the kid only to have him/her taken away to foster care upon reaching the age of six, and the kids grow up in a really s**** environment that will probably eff them up for life? Is that correct?

Wow. This is one of the most interesting discussion prompts I've seen come up on CP in a while. The implications for both the children and the mothers are something I wish the article would explore more deeply. I also wish the photography had not been done in black and white so that the environment the children are being raised in could be seen a little more accurately.
