Default Buying Canadian/Boycotting US Goods

I know this is a little redundant with the tariff thread but I figured it warrant its own separate discussion.

Anyone have some suggestions on the easiest ways to buy Canadian? What’s everyone’s plan on where they’ll draw the line and how they’ll help support Canadian companies?

Most of the grocery stores around me have put up a little flags on the shelves but I’ve been led to believe that that can be misleading depending on where it was produced or packaged versus whether or not the contents are Canadian etc.

Any good resources to find Canadian alternatives?

Curious to see what advice CPers have for things that they plan on buying Canadian or boycotting American. Obviously there’s a limit. I am unlikely to completely stop consuming American media be it tv shows or movies or music. It would be very difficult to stop consuming American sports. And both of those are complicated because many of them are produced in Canada or involved Canadian athletes/Canadian teams.

I know I’ll be avoiding American travel as much as possible. Even that has its limitations. I have a trip planned for the fall, and while it’s only a two-day trip that I booked prior to the tariffs, I still feel a little bit of patriotic pressure to cancel it.

There’s also a financial aspect to all of this. Obviously people who have more disposable income will be able to more easily absorb the potential additional costs that involve buying Canadian.

I've been told that the CFL is a competitor to NFL. Does that help?

Consume US American media the old fashioned way: Pirating. Don't pay those American service providers, but still get the content. Everybody wins.

I don't read the tarriff thread because it's boring and I can never remember how to spell tarrif so thanks for this.

I am a bit of a pickle snob. Don't give me no shelf-stable soggy lump. I want a proper deli pickle which is hard to find in Canada. America has tons of great brands, but not so much here. Lately I've been trying Hobbs Pickles from Vancouver. I get them from Lina's and there are a few other stores that carry them.

https://hobbspickles.com/alberta/

I won't judge you if you go with Bick's. They're more affordable and you have to sacrifice a little during trying times.

The CFL should 100% start airing some patriotic ads and see if it pays off. They’ve tried to play up the nationalistic angle in the past but I could see it really paying dividends now.

I don’t know how much of a competitor they are to the NFL but it seems like an easy way to jump on the buy Canadian bandwagon.

People don’t have to stop watching the NFL (although they could) to start supporting the CFL.

I have just switched to Nature Clean dishwasher detergent.

Bought a 24 pack to start. First load was last night, so I'll have to report how well it works compared to Finish.

For people that use the Flipp app, it now has a "Buy Canadian" tab as of today.

Co-op has started putting flags on the price tags for Canadian products.

Reddit has subreddit called buycanadian with lots of tips and tricks.

Beware that several of the large grocery companies like Loblaws and Sobey's have jumped on the Produced in Canada slogan, but have been caught on occasions using the labels to mislead in buying their own brand over others (Compliments brand being the most egregious). Make sure to read the package.

Damn. They have some really great menswear and household stuff. But it’s hard to imagine stores that big ever competing with online shipping.

If there’s any positive side to this it’s some awesome going out of business sales?

My personal hierarchy is:

Fully Canadian > partially Canadian (origin or production or company) > any other country > USA.

I do hope that this improves our labelling regulations. Even before this mess, I have been annoyed by “imported by Loblaws” or whatever. From where? So many things don’t actually list the country of origin and that’s frustrating. It should be law to state a product’s “domestic-ness” with no ambiguity.

It's been kinda fun going to the grocery store and looking for Canadian/non-US foodstuffs. Haven't had to buy toiletries/household cleaning products etc yet though and I imagine it will be harder to avoid US products for those.

I was already a bit anti-American in my alcohol buying, so no change there. I've also only vacationed in the US three times in the past 20 years so that's easily avoided.

I'm not perfect in other areas though. Though I don't watch American sports, I've been watching WWE more frequently recently (and I'm aware of their connections to the Trump administration) and likewise my wife watches Amazon Prime a lot, and shops on there quite a bit although hopefully that recedes. Going to the cinema is something I love doing and obviously it's hard to not watch American movies there.

How do people feel about US chain restaurants? I haven't made up my mind there yet, not sure I want to punish Canadian franchisees.

I'm mainly considering the retailer itself, and then the product.
Instead of ordering stuff on Amazon like usual; I'm going to Canadian Tire or Superstore or wherever has that product.
I've avoided Costco lately as well.

I think the main thing we can do is impact the really big US companies, as they have a voice and we need that voice to speak up to the stupidity.
Much like the US automakers did this week.
