I dont' understand the church. When he was extremely ill why can't they replace him with another pope, rather than waiting until he dies. It seems like a lot of work for someone who is rather ill.

I think it's up to him to step down. He should have years ago I think.

The Catholic church believes that the Pope is chosen directly by God so the Pope must stay the Pope until he dies.

At least that's what the chairperson of my church's board said.

Correct. Pope can't just step down. He is chosen by God. Unless God had told him directly to step down he can't.

Apparently he has now sufferred cardiac arrest and is in shock now. Sounds like the end for sure.

They said on the news that he refused to go for more treatment at the hospital too. Isn't that sort of hypocritical given his stance on maintaing life support for others?

Saw on the news his health is really failing. High fever, urinary infection, and some heart problems, and is in very serious condition. Doesn't look good for him.
