Default Terry Fox Documentary, Directed by Steve Nash

Quote:
On Sept. 28, Nash's debut film, "Into the Wind," will air on ESPN. And while he's not expecting it'll make Fox the same folk hero in the U.S. as he is in Canada, he hopes his legend does spread.

"We're not foolish enough to think America's going to drop everything, because obviously it's a country with a lot going on," Nash said to laughs after a screening of the documentary Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"It would just be great if the film could help Terry inspire people like he inspired me."

The 51-minute documentary airs in Canada on Sept. 19 on TSN2 and Sept. 30 on CTV.

Among those in the audience for the emotional documentary's premiere -- which had many audience members in tears -- was Canadian director Jason Reitman, whom Nash later cited as one of the filmmakers he admires.

Quote:
"I remember being a six-year-old boy and waking up every morning and rushing to the TV to see where Terry was that day," Nash has said. "To see his face hiding the pain and to hear his words disguising the sacrifice was as motivating and as educational an experience as I've ever had." Judging from Into the Wind, Nash has the potential for a second career in filmmaking. This is your chance to see him at the start.

Side note: Next up from Nash is a documentary about Pele, followed by a yet-to-be-named full-length feature film.

Looking forward to seeing this. The 30 for 30 series of documentaries has been very good so far. My favourite thus far has to be the one about the South African rugby World Cup and Nelson Mandela ("The 16th Man"). I also quite enjoyed "The Band that Wouldn't Die" about the Baltimore Colts marching band.

I've been waiting for this one for a while. While in Phoenix in April, I read a great article in a Suns game program about the documentary. 30 for 30 has been great - I just wish they didn't cost as much as they do on iTunes ($4.99 each).

Very much looking forward to this. Terry Fox's marathon of hope was a real inspiration to me when I was young, and showed me that there really are no limits to what one can accomplish when determined to do so. I remember when he passed away on June 28, 1981, I was at church and tons of people were crying when they heard the news. Terry Fox really made an impact and I can't wait to see how Steve Nash captures that.

This was excellent, still the most inspirational story around in my books.

Ya I'd have to agree.

If there was a person that I would ever want to fashion my life after it would be Terry Fox. What he has done for cancer research is so remarkable. It's just a shame that he's not able to personally see the positive impact he's made on the lives of millions of Canadians. It's very personal for me since my mom is a cancer survivor and I know that my mom being alive today has a lot to do with what Terry did 30 years ago.

To me Terry Fox is hands down the greatest Canadian who ever lived. The sacrifice and courage he displayed is very hard to rival in any setting. Not only that, his efforts have produced so much good for so many people to this day and will continue to do so well into the future.

Caught a re-airing of this last night on TSN, that was unbelieveable! Very very well done, I actually totally forgot that Steve Nash was a co-creator until I saw the credits afterwards. I think they did a great job humanising him(as opposed to portraying him as some infallible living legend, as some movies tend to do on past heroes like this), like when he was visibly frustrated with the media, and near the end when was clearly in pain and exhausted, and just wanted to know how close he was to home so he could be done with it.

I remember learning about Terry Fox when I was in elementary school, and when you're 10, someone who's 21 may as well be 40 to you. But seeing clips of him now - which I haven't seen since probably elementary school - where I've got a few years on him now from during his run, he just looks like a kid. You can see this too on the show when he talks to crowds and has this goofy sense of humour, he just seems so young. I've never seen him from that angle before.

Truly inspiring story, pretty heart-wrenching too. I highly recommend it. Easily my fav of the 30 for 30's so far, along with The Two Escobars.

This is a cool observation and something I’ve not considered before...I’ll have to try and keep that perspective in mind when I watch this and see how it changes my impression of the magnitude of what he did as, essentially, a kid.

I thought it was a great documentary. It's awesome that ESPN put this out. Hopefully Americians can get to know a Canadian legend.

I did struggle a bit through the documentary. It was hard watching Terry struggle with some of the media and super stardom that came his way.

My sister was a Terry Fox humanitarian award winner last year at age 24. She survived a very rare cancer when she was a kid and has now started a local charity to help families handle cancer financially when their kids are in the hospital.
Currently Pepsi is running a contest to give away $25,000 to top voted charities. You can vote once per day per email addy. Top 2 charities get paid, currently in 3rd.
