Okay, I know some people here go on trips. I'm planning a trip to NYC in October, and I'm looking at some suggestions for safe inexpensive places to stay. Basically, I'm planning on going the Hostel route. I've found some & I'm trying to figure out if they're worth the $$ & are in a safe area (particularly for a single gal) & whatnot. So far I've come up with:

Dexter House Hostel
345 West 86th Street

Sugar Hill International House (Harlem)
722 St. Nicholas Ave

Hostelling International New York (kinda worried about bed bugs complaint & area)
891 Amsterdam Avenue

Hotel 31 (a tad expensive)
120 East 31st Street

Another place: Wanderer's Inn East () sounds good, except for the lack of lockers. Anyone stayed there before?

I've been looking around for hostel reviews (traveladvisor.com, hostelz.com, etc), but even the ones that have reviews, its still hard to determine whether its a good deal.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a price range of what you want to pay?

I stayed in a hotel in New Jersey that cost me $35 US last year through Priceline and it was a short bus ride from my hotel to Grand Central station.

Well, I'd like to stay in the $30-$40 range. I definately can't do more than $100/night. My thing against staying too far away - I'll be going to a couple concerts at Irving Plaza, and I probably won't get out of those until after midnight. So, I don't know how comfortable I'd feel waiting for a bus (even though I think I'd be okay waiting for a subway car... I know, I'm strange)

Too many Law & Order episodes might've just made me paranoid, though
