Default Canada: not 2nd biggest country?

As I am sure was the case with most of you, I was always taught that Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world.

Wikipedia--far from perfect, I know--seems to suggest that Canada is in fact the 4th largest, behind Russia, China and the USA.

Can this be true? If you subtract all the lakes is the US really larger than Canada?

If you subtract all the states that end in 'a' then the states is a much smaller country.

Whats with the arbitrary subtractions?

Lakes are part of our territory. Not sure why you would exclude them.

As far as usuable land goes, the U.S. far more than us though.

It's more than just lakes. We've got three oceans bordering us and the arctic is a huge area of many, many islands. I like how someone felt the need to yell out LAND AREA over and over in that list though.

There's dirt at the bottom of those lakes - that's Canada too.

Did someone change the article in the last half hour? I see it showing us as second.

Hah, that was me.

The link in the OP was a redirect from a search of "List of the world's largest countries". Standard definition is that that includes all area, not just land area, so I repointed it to the list that goes by total area.

The article icarus was referring to is still here, and lists Canada as fourth by land area:

I see that if we invaded the USA and subjugated them to our socialist ways, we would surpass Russia as #1. Get it done, Harper!
