Here's the story: a pharmaceutical company is trying to develop a new drug to help treat diabetes, but their research comes in inconclusive, they lose their primary funding and are looking like they are going to go under.
In comes an internet entrepreneur desperate to help his daughter who has diabetes. He steps up and invests $18 million of his own money in the company, virtually singlehandedly keeping the research going.
Jump forward a couple of years: the research continues, the studies are positive, FDA gives approval for a drug which will help tens of thousands and the guy's $18 million investment now worth $200 million.
