Got some of this from SIW. This seems to be running too hot to me, although I'm not very informed on systems and heat.

I think there is something going on with my video card. My Radeon seems to be running too hot IMO. Anyone know more about this stuff than me? This while watching the game online. I had my system physically shut itself down while watching it full screen.

Try to see if the fan is actually running on your video card. That's way too hot.

That's what I thought as well. After turning the game off now, the video card is now down to 84 C. I think that freakin SCII killed my video card when it was running at full pace before the fix. Damn.

What model Radeon?

Many Radeons are spec'ed to go above 100 degrees, but really they should be running cooler than that. Your other temps look ok.

84 at idle is still very high, it should idle down at 40's.

It's down to 75 now and continues to drop after turning the game off.

I do think it might be the fan. I haven't taken the system apart to check, but perhaps it's time for a new card anyway.

Suggestions folks? Comparable to this one? I'm not looking to spend too much. I'm not a high end gamer or anything. I just watch the odd thing, including some HD content on the system.

Yeah the temperature should drop off pretty quickly after stopping the game, but going from only 84 to 75 in like 20 minutes doesn't sound right either.

From the reviews I found of the card it sounds like 60 isn't uncommon for it to idle at, and 80-90 for load temps (assuming a stock card, not a card from Sapphire or MSI or something with a different cooler), so it sounds to me like your cooler is definitely messed up or it's not mounted properly or the fan is not working. The rest of your temps seem fine so I'm going to guess it's not the case being filled with super hot air.

I usually end up getting an aftermarket cooler for my video cards as they are usually much quieter and cooler (and I'm picky about PC noise), but in this case it seems like overkill for an inexpensive video card.. do you spend $30 on a new cooler, or just replace the video card?

Those would work with that card, if it is the cooler and it's out of warranty.

My video card pretty much exploded a month ago. The fan died and 10 minutes later the screen went nuts. I ended up picking up the GTS 250 1GB card to replace it and have been very happy with it. The eVGA model has a huge fan on it that pretty much guarantees I'll never have temperature issues on it.

This is more future proof than your choice, but it's not terribly quiet. I had a GeForce 8800 before and it had half the fan noise from this one.

First thing you should do is repaste the GPU cooler and clean out the fan.

Hmmm...yeah, that would be my one concern, although this card I have now has never been that quiet. Good deal on this one though.

I wonder why the 4670 is running so hot..I have a passively cooled HD 4670 (this one: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...rd-review.html) and it idles down around 40 some odd degrees I believe.

Either the fan is not working properly or the card is physically damaged. I had an 8800GTX with new TIM and totally clean and working fan that idle'd at 105° C!

It has to be the fan. I'm going to pick up a new card most likely tomorrow so I haven't opened the system up yet. I'm assuming that's what it is. When not watching something, it's not too bad heat wise, so I'm not concerned about opening it right now.

That's overpriced since you can get one for half price at NCIX. If you don't want to order, just get it at Memory Express and they'll price match. They also have their own deals to look at.

other cards to consider in the $100 price range are the Geforce GT 240 and maybe the new GTS 450, although when you get into GTS 450 or ATI 5750, 5770 territory, you have to check if your power supply will handle it.

I've got a problem with overheating also, so I didn't want to start a new thread.
I put together a computer out of old parts and bought a small board and a Intel e5400 processor to go with it. First time actually building one from scratch.

Anyways I used the CPU heatsink off of an e6750, instead of the one supplied, as it's twice the size and I thought it would cool it better. Everything seems to work fine after having problems getting it to boot, except core 0 reads 52C while core 1 reads 34C. I get the same readings on three different monitors such as Core Temp and Speed fan but the thing is the temperature stays the same at idle and under load. I even overclocked it to 3000MHz from 2700 and the temperature readings stay the same. The case is well ventilated and has three fans. All other temperatures except CPUTIN (also 52C) seem fine and the bios temperatures are fine also.

My options seem to be
a) ignore it
b) change the heatsink to the stock one or
c) get new thermal compound and reseat the heatsink.

of course I'm lazy and would rather not do option b and c as the computer seems solid.

Any advice appreciated.

I get a big swing between cores as well, I think it's pretty common from what I've read, heat spreader isn't totally flat or the heatsink isn't totally flat.. 52 seems a bit high for idle but not crazy, mine idle at 34 and 40, 50 and 58 under load. On a Q9500.

Maybe an obvious question, but is there an easy way to check the power supply? I suppose the SIW software I used to post the numbers off the top would tell me exactly what is what, would it not? What numbers are important to know when card shopping?

There's no way for the PC to query the power supply to get a model # or anything, so in that case you'll have to pop the case to look at the PS and look for a label, or if your PC is a pre-built like a Dell or HP or whatever, then you could look up the model on the web and probably find the wattage rating.

Thanks photon. I obviously have to pop it open to change cards, so I'll open it up this weekend and get that info. It was a complete HP system that I bought, so I should be able to find those details online as well.
