Default Computer Down :(

Hi guys,

I thought i would see if anyone has any ideas , Something has happend to my computer that i havent seen before. I restarted my computer and i get a blue screen saying "cannot load windows"

I loaded up system restore (windows 7) and it wont let me select the drive to restore windows from last update.

confused i was, then i entered the command prompt and there is nothing on my C drive, just out of curiosity i changed to the d drive and typed dir. The contents of d are what should be in c.

well it appears the somehow my C drive has been changed to D drive and i dont know what i can do to change this back without losing everything

hp laptop
windows 7

Thanks in advance

It gets quite technical, but you can fix this using the command line tools diskpart and bcdedit. Start here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...65(WS.10).aspx

If you aren't seriously computer savvy, either do a system restore using your disks from HP, or take it to a professional.

How would the c drive suddenly become a d drive? That's kinda weird, isn't it?

If I remember correctly, using a boot disk for the system restore - it makes a virtual partition which it calls c: then moves your original c: to d:

Can you not load safe mode or anything?

No you couldnt enter safe mode.

Not sure how it happened, but i managed to use my external harddrive and back everything up and i restored windows. Didnt take very long.

everyone should invest into an external hard drive and backup everything you have before its to late, kinda scary how easy it can happen.

thanks for your help
